Normal CornBelters News Release

The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up an eight-run 7th inning en route to a 15-0 defeat by the London Rippers Saturday night at the Corn Crib.

London's Jamie Richmond (6-3) registered the win with a complete game shutout, while recently acquired Drew Provence (1-1) took a tough loss for the 'Belters.

After a scoreless first two innings, London third baseman Steven Cardullo got the Rippers on the board with a two-run triple to the gap in right center. The next batter, Joash Brodin, followed that up with a two-run home run over the wall in center, pushing the London lead to 4-0.

Jim Vahalik continued the scoring for the Rippers in the 4th with an RBI double to the corner in left bringing in Brad Agustin to make it 5-0. An inning later, in the 5th, it was again Vahalik who punished the 'Belters, this time with an RBI single to right.

Designated hitter Mark Samuelson sent his second home run of the series to the berm in right in the top of the 7th. London would go on to get seven more runs in the inning, the bulk of which came on a grand slam by Cardullo, extending the Ripper advantage to 14-0. London would add one final tally in the 9th.

The 'Belters managed just five hits in the game. Catcher Bubby Williams collected two, while Ty Wiesemeyer, Pat Dockendorf, and Bobby Rinard each added a hit apiece.

Beginning Sunday at 6:30 the 'Belters will welcome the Southern Illinois Miners to the Corn Crib for the start of a three-game set. Normal starting pitcher Jacob Liedka (1-6, 4.23 ERA) faces off against the Miners' Daniel Calhoun (3-1, 3.38 ERA). Pregame begins at 6:20 on WJBC.com.
