
Miners Fowler Strong in Win

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners defeated the Washington Wild Things by a score of 3-0 at Rent One Park. Miners starter Brian Fowler (5-4) pitched eight innings giving up five hits in his fifth win of the season. He walked two batters and struck out four in his first shutout of the season.
The Miners took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off Wild things starter Justin Hall as Will Block hit a sacrifice fly with one out to score Carlos Mendez from third base. Ken Gregory had moved Mendez over to third with a base hit. The Miners scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off Hall when Chad Maddox hit a two run home run to give the Miners a 3-0 lead. For Maddox, that was his eighth home run of the season, now tied with Jake Kaase for the most on the Miners.
Justin Hall (2-6) of the Washington Wild Things pitched 5.1 innings in earning his sixth loss of the season. He gave up three runs off seven hits and struck out five batters. Wild Things reliever Alfonso Yevoli threw 1.2 innings in relief and only gave up two hits. He struck out three batters in his relief appearance. Shawn Smith pitched the eighth inning for Washington, giving up two hits and walking one batter in a scoreless effort.
The Miners would go on and win the game as Miners closer Albert Ayala pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the season. The Miners won the game 3-0 and are now 34-23 on the season. The Miners begin a six game road trip tomorrow beginning at the Corn Crib in Normal, Illinois. First pitch will get underway at 5:00. The Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show with Mike Ventola will get underway at 4:40 pm.
