Rockford RiverHawks News Release

LOVES PARK, Ill. - Devin Shepherd's last at-bat as a professional ballplayer was one to remember. The Rockford designated hitter hit a walkoff double in the 10th inning as the RiverHawks beat Traverse City, 2-1, on Friday.

On Saturday, the RiverHawks announced the retirement of the former St. Louis farmhand. Shepherd said he plans to return to California to raise his newborn daughter. Shepherd hit .252 with two home runs and 15 RBI in 35 games this season. The RiverHawks also announced the signing of rookie pitcher Brad Schnitzer.

Shepherd joined the RiverHawks last fall to complete an August 2011 trade with Windy City. Shepherd hit .277 with 14 home runs and 104 RBI in a four-year career. The Cardinals drafted Shepherd in the 11th round in 2008.

Schnitzer pitched for Butler University this spring. He went 3-4 with a 5.07 ERA in 24 games, seven as a starter. He struck out 47 and walked 21 in 60 1/3 innings. The left-hander is Rockford's scheduled starter Sunday at Gateway.

The RiverHawks are members of the Frontier League, an independent professional baseball league in its 20th season. Games are broadcast live on WNTA (100.5 FM). Advertising and season-ticket information is available by calling (815) 885-2255. Fans can also visit www.rockfordriverhawks.com.
