Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, Ill. - Using a five-run eighth inning explosion Saturday evening, the Gateway Grizzlies completed the series sweep of the Schaumburg Boomers by way of a 6-3 victory at GCS Ballpark.
3,549 Grizzlies (32-25) faithful saw another late inning rally over the Boomers (33-24) in the series finale, this time sparked by Jon Myers (1-for-3) RBI single that tied the contest at 2-2. Gateway would finish the frame with five tallies on four hits while batting around in the stanza, adding to the six runs on 11 hits that the Grizzlies racked up collectively.
Catcher Justin Dunning drove an RBI sac fly out to center to aid the offensive flurry, and second baseman and leadoff specialist Jonathan Johnson (1-for-4) poked a two RBI triple out to deep right center to rake in a pair of insurance runs. Chris McClendon (1-for-4) ended the big inning with an RBI single that scored Rogelio Noris (2-for-4) and established the eventual six run winner.
"This is why we all play the game," commented Dunning after the three hour and twelve minute affair. "The clubhouse is amazing, the fans are great, and we are hot right now. It is all a great feeling."
Grizzlies right-hander Alex Kaminsky was superb in his seven innings of work from the hill, allowing only one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts to register the no decision. Reliever Zac Treece (2-0) claimed the win, as the Gateway set-up man tossed one full frame while allowing only one hit and setting down two by way of strikeout.
Adam Tollefson (1-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs, two earned, in his one inning of work. The Grizzlies forced the Boomers to activate five hurlers in the 6-3 decision.
Fueling the excitement at GCS Ballpark is a five-game win streak that Gateway is currently riding. The Grizzlies have also won four straight series and are victors in nine of their last eleven contests, and sit only two-and-a-half back of Windy City for first place in the FL West Division.
The Grizzlies welcome the Rockford RiverHawks to Sauget tomorrow night at 6:05 PM in game one of a three game set. Righty Brett Zawacki will start for the home team.
