OHL Kingston Frontenacs

Continuing to Climb

November 26, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kingston Frontenacs News Release

The Kingston Frontenacs took three of four points last week in two East Division showdowns with a 5-3 win over the Peterborough Petes, followed by a 4-3 OT comeback win by the Oshawa Generals at the Leon's Centre, wrapping up the week.

The schedule can be deceiving at times early in the season with games played, and the Fronts have played the least amount of any team in the East division. Over the last 10 games, the Fronts have tallied 13 points, tied for third-most in the Eastern Conference and fourth overall in the OHL. Sitting one point back of Division leader Hamilton (22 points), the Frontenacs have played one less game than every member of the East Division with three less than Ottawa.

Petes Sent Packing

Kingston won their fifth of six home-themed games on Hockey Fights Cancer night against the Petes last Friday. After being down a goal twice, the Fronts managed to come back for the 5-3 win with a Francesco Arcuri game-winning goal with 57 seconds left sealed by a Maddox Callens (5) empty-netter. First star Jordan Frasca (2G,2A) tallied the first shorthanded goal for the Black and Gold, and Lucas Edmonds had four assists (second consecutive four-point game) to pace the home side, earning second-star status. Frasca is the only Frontenacs player to record a goal on the powerplay, penalty kill, and at full strength.

Rookie Jackson Stewart was buzzing, making life busy for the opposition with multiple hits versus Peterborough. "It's a huge win," said the hard-nosed forward. "We've been doing it lately, but we played a full 60 tonight and came back. We seem to have the character in coming back that helps us." On being voted the BMW Kingston Hardest Worker award player by the fans, the rookie forward was happy, "I love that and was very excited to hear I got it; it's awesome to get fans' appreciation in your home rink."

Generals Grab Extra Point

On Sunday, the Gennies visited the Limestone City for the first time, stealing a 4-3 OT win on a Ty Tullio powerplay goal in extra time. Arcuri scored his sixth in the opening frame, registering the team's first opening goal in five games, with Edmonds and Frasca assisting to extend point-streaks for all three, respectively. In the final period, Oshawa scored the second shorthanded goal against Kingston, tying the game before Maddox Callens' sixth put the Fronts up 3-2 with under eight minutes to play. Callens was given the BGM MetalWorks Inc Play of the Week for his heat-seeker shot labelled for the top-shelf beating Leaver. The gritty forward also had a spirited scrap with a much larger Riley Pitt after a General defender hit on an unsuspecting teammate earning the BMW Kingston Hardest Worker award as well.

However, an empty-net goal by the Gens with just over a minute remaining sent the game to extra time, marking the sixth time (four in the last six) Kingston would go to overtime. A late penalty by Kingston had Oshawa on the powerplay starting the overtime session, and it didn't take long for Tullio to find the back of the net with a howitzer off a one-timed pass 1:17 in for the 4-3 win.

Defenceman Jake Murray had his second straight game with a helper. Leevi Meriläinen lost his first start in four games.

Rolling Rolling Rolling...

Assistant Captain Lucas Edmonds had five points in the two games and continues a torrid scoring pace with the overage rookie OHL'er fourth-overall in Ontario Hockey league, scoring 33 points. However, his 1.88 points-per-game place him atop the league's best. The North Bay, ON native, is on a seven-game point streak collecting five goals and 12 assists and registered his third four-point (4A) game in Friday's win versus the Petes. Matthew Soto holds the current longest streak for Kingston at eight games from Oct 15 to Nov 7. His 20 assists place him second n the OHL behind North Bay's Brandon Coe (24), and he sits sixth in shots-on-goal (75).
