Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

The Binghamton Mets, down early, were able to trim the Connecticut Defenders' lead to one, but that was as close as they would get, falling 4-3 in the series opener at NYSEG Stadium Monday. The B-Mets, playing their fourth straight one-run game, saw their three-game losing streak come to an end.

Connecticut (18-11) got to Will Vazquez, who was making his B-Mets debut, in the third when Alex Requena singled, stole second and third and scored on Travis Ishikawa's two-out base hit. Jake Wald led off the fourth with a solo shot off Vazquez (0-1) before opposing pitcher Matt Palmer doubled and scored on a single and an error for a 3-0 lead. The Defenders picked up their fourth run when Nate Schierholtz tripled home Requena in the sixth.

In the seventh, the B-Mets (15-16) got on the board thanks to Michel Abreu's second homer in as many games, a solo shot that led off the inning. Two batters later, Jay Caligiuri homered for the second straight contest, pulling Binghamton within 4-2. The B-Mets would score their final run in the eighth when Jonathan Slack reached on a two-base error and scored on Wilson Batista's single up the middle.

Palmer (4-0) tossed five one-hit innings for the win while Billy Sadler pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save.

Tuesday, the B-Mets play the second game of their three-game series with the Connecticut Defenders. Mike Pelfrey (0-0, 4.66) starts for Binghamton against Connecticut's Garrett Broshuis (1-1, 2.22). Game time is 6:00 from NYSEG Stadium with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show kicking off the broadcast at 5:45 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
