Connecticut Defenders News Release

Shortstop Jake Wald went 3-4 with a home run, and new addition, centerfielder Alex Requena had three hits as well, as the Connecticut Defenders defeated the Mets, 4-3, in Binghamton on Monday night.

Connecticut jumped out ahead in the 3rd inning, when the speedy Requena singled, stole second and third base, and came home on an RBI single by Travis Ishikawa. Connecticut added two more in the 4th on Wald's solo homer and an RBI single from Requena that plated the pitcher, Matt Palmer, who had doubled. The Defenders made it 4-0 with a run in the 6th inning on an RBI triple by Nate Schierholtz, that brought home Requena who had singled and swiped his third bag of the day. But, the Mets touched up Jason Waddell for two solo home runs in the 7th inning, and they pushed across an unearned run off Joe Bateman in the 8th to make it a 4-3 game. However, Billy Sadler came on to pitch a perfect 1-2-3 9th to pick up his fifth save of the season and nail down the win for Palmer (3-0) and the Defenders.

The Defenders will look to extend their second-longest winning streak of the season to five games tomorrow night when they play Game Two of their three-game set in Binghamton against the Mets. First pitch is scheduled for 6pm.
