PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending May 7th:

Reading Phillies outfielder John Castellano has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending May 7th. The 28-year old joined the R-Phils on Monday after receiving a promotion from Single-A Lakewood and got off to an excellent start, batting .500 (16-for-32) with two doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI, seven runs scored, one walk and a .750 slugging percentage in seven games. Castellano, a native of Boynton Beach, Florida, has a hit in all seven games he has played in with Reading this season, including a 4-for-4 performance on May 3rd, and is currently riding a 17-game hitting streak that started on April 19th with Lakewood. John, who hit .340 with 18 home runs in 103 games for the R-Phils in 2004, was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as a Minor League Free Agent on April 17, 2006 after being released by the Cincinnati Reds organization earlier in the season.

Kason Gabbard, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Portland Sea Dogs, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 7th. The 24-year old made a pair of starts for the Sea Dogs last week, going 2-0 with 17 strikeouts and a 0.69 ERA. In his first appearance of the week Gabbard struck out a career-high 10 batters and gave up just two hits in six shutout innings of work to earn a win against the Connecticut Defenders at Hadlock Field on Monday. In his second start of the week the 6'3", 200 lb. hurler pitched seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits and striking out seven batters to pick up a victory against the Rock Cats at New Britain Stadium on Sunday. Kason, who is currently tied for the league lead in wins (4) and has held opposing hitters to a .184 batting average so far this season, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 29th round of the June 2000 draft out of Ithaca College.
