Connecticut beats Sea Dogs 4-3 in opener

Clay Timpner scored the winning run on a stolen base and a throwing error by Portland catcher Dusty Brown, lifting Connecticut to a 4-3 victory over the Sea Dogs on Monday night in the series opener.

Luis Mendoza (0-1) allowed 11 hits over six and 1/3 innings to suffer his first Double-A loss. Garrett Brushuis (3-4) worked six strong innings, scattering four hits and three runs to notch the victory for Connecticut. Billy Sadler pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 10th save of the season.

Brandon Moss had two hits, including an RBI triple in the fifth inning. Moss scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Spann to tie the game at three.

In the seventh inning, Timpner reached on an infield hit off Mendoza's glove. Frank Brooks entered the game, making his Sea Dogs debut and walked Brian Buscher. Connecticut had both runners in motion but Brown's throw sailed into left field, allowing Timpner to score the go ahead run.

Connecticut scored twice in the third inning on RBI's by Buscher (triple) and Brian Horwitz (single). They made it 3-0 in the fourth inning on a wild pitch by Mendoza.

Portland scored their first run on a bases loaded, sacrifice fly by Chris Durbin.

Joe Bateman pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the hold for Connecticut.

Notes...Portland's home winning streak was snapped at six...Tyler Minges went 0-for-5 after going 5-for-6 on Sunday...The Sea Dogs had their five hits during innings four through seven.
