Defenders "steal" a win from Portland, 4-3
June 19, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
The Connecticut Defenders headed to Portland for game one of an eight game trip to play the two teams ahead of them in the standings, and they passed a tough test in game one with a 4-3 win over the first place Sea Dogs.
The Defenders gave some early run support to Garrett Broshuis who has struggled in his last four starts. Brian Buscher knocked in Alex Requena with a triple in the 3rd inning. It was one of Buscher's three hits on the game. He was then knocked in on a Brian Horwitz RBI single. The Defenders loaded the bases but could not get another run until the following inning when Brian Munhall scored on a wild pitch after a balk got him to third base.
Portland scored in the bottom half of the 4th inning to make the score 3-1, but also left the bases loaded. Portland was not done scoring, though. In the bottom of the 5th, Brandon Moss hit an RBI triple to score Tyler Minges, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Spann to tie the game 3-3. Broshuis rebounded and pitched a scoreless 6th inning, and was rewarded in the top of the 7th when his team made him the pitcher of record. Clay Timpner singled and went to second base on a walk to Brian Buscher. He then took off with Brian Horwitz at bat and stole third base. Dusty Brown's throw to third went into centerfield, and Timpner broke for home with the eventual game winning run. Joe Bateman and Billy Sadler combined to pitch three scoreless innings in the 4-3 win. Broshuis improved to 3-4, while Sadler took his 10th save.
On Tuesday, the Defenders will try and take their fifth win in six tries with a 7:00 first pitch at Portland. Right hander Kason Gabbard (8-2) will take on the Defenders lefty, Pat Misch (5-3).
