Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

For the second time this year, Binghamton Mets lefthanded pitcher William Collazo has been named the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week, earning the award for the week ending Sunday.

Tuesday, Collazo opened Binghamton's most recent homestand with a complete-game shutout vs. New Britain, helping the B-Mets to a 2-0 victory. That night, the Miami, FL native scattered five hits and allowed just six balls out of the infield, four of which were outs. Collazo, who began the game by retiring 16 of the first 18 to face him, did not walk anyone and struck out five, garnering his third career shutout and first in nearly two years.

The 26-year old followed up Tuesday's outing with another strong showing Sunday vs. Trenton, allowing two runs on five hits and no walks over seven innings, striking out six. However, Collazo got a no-decision in Binghamton's 4-2 loss.

Signed by the New York Mets during spring training, Collazo has quickly established himself as the ace of the B-Mets' staff, compiling a 6-4 record and a 2.23 ERA, good for seventh in the EL, while his 93 innings pitched lead the league. Originally a 10th-round pick of Atlanta in 2001, Collazo has stepped up his game even more in June, going 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA while lasting at least seven innings in all four of his outings this month.

Collazo also won the EL's Pitcher of the Week award for the week ending April 16th, not allowing a run in his first two starts. Outfielder Jorge Padilla is the only other B-Mets player to win one of the league's weekly honors this season, being named EL Player of the Week for the week ending April 23rd.

Tuesday, the Binghamton Mets start a seven-game road trip, playing the first game of a four-game series with the Akron Aeros. Game time is 7:05. The B-Mets return home next Tuesday, June 27th, starting a seven-game homestand with three against the Reading Phillies before the New Hampshire Fisher Cats come to NYSEG Stadium for a four-game set.
