Condors Weekly - Bakersfield Keeps Pace In Playoff Race

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors kept pace with the Phoenix RoadRunners in the playoff race, going 2-2-0 last week with victories against first place clubs Las Vegas and Idaho. A 3-2 win on Monday night against the Steelheads in front of the hometown crowd capped off the action.

The Condors are 19-33-9 on the season and are in fourth place in the Pacific Division, ninth place in the National Conference. They sit just one point behind the RoadRunners for the final National Conference playoff spot with one head-to-head meeting remaining.

PHOENIX 5 vs. Condors 4

Condors newcomers D Martin Frechette and F Alexander Naurov both recorded a pair of assists in their Condors debuts, but Bakersfield fell to Phoenix, 5-4. Down by two goals early in the first period, F Andrew Ianiero scored twice on the power play and D Jay Langager tallied as well to make it 3-2 at the end of the first. But the RoadRunners scored three times in the second period to regain the lead for good.

Friday, March 7

Condors 2 vs. LAS VEGAS 1, SO

LW Mark Derlago notched his 29th of the season in the first period, and LW Brett Lutes recorded the only goal for either team in the shootout to lift the Condors to victory on the road in Las Vegas. G Michel Robinson made 34 saves in regulation and overtime, and was a perfect 5-for-5 in the shootout for the Condors, who defeated the Wranglers for the third time this season.

Saturday, March 8

Idaho 3 vs. CONDORS 0

Attn: 6,842

G Yutaka Fukufuji made 40 saves, including 24 in the first period alone, but it wasn't enough for Bakersfield, who was shut out by Steelheads G Matt Zaba. The Idaho netminder stopped all 29 shots the Condors threw his way for his second shutout of the season.

Monday, March 10

CONDORS 3 vs. Idaho 2

F Tim Konsorada's 29th of the season just 1:08 into the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and held up to be the game winner on Monday against the Idaho Steelheads. Bakersfield held 1-0 and 2-1 leads before Konsorada put them up for good in the third, while holding Idaho to just 27 shots on goal. LW Tom Boudreau and LW Brett Lutes also lit the lamp for the Condors, while D Martin Frechette tallied two assists. G Yutaka Fukufuji made 25 saves to earn his 11th win of the season.

PLAYER NOTES:

With two goals on Thursday night, F Andrew Ianiero moved into fourth place on the Condors all-time points list, surpassing C Kevin St. Jacques. Ianiero now has 189 points in his Condors career. Two of the Condors new acquisitions made their Bakersfield debuts last week, with F Alexander Naurov and D Martin Frechette both tallying two assists on Thursday night in their first game with the club. Frechette also picked up two assists on Monday night and has four points (0g-4a) in four games with the Condors.

Rookie LW Tom Boudreau scored his first goal as a Condor, and third of the season, on Monday night. He now has five points (1g-4a) in 20 games since being acquired from Reading in January.

Friday's shootout win in Las Vegas gives the Condors victories in three consecutive shootouts, after dropping seven straight to start the season.

Thursday night's game in Phoenix was the 500th game of Head Coach Marty Raymond's coaching career.

D Derrick Byfuglien made his Condors debut on Monday night. Byfuglien was picked up by the Condors in a trade last week with the South Carolina Stingrays.

D David Kudelka (3-IR) and F Ryan Gibbons (7-IR) were both activated on Monday. Also on Monday, D Joe Dustin (3-IR) and RW Chris Di Ubaldo (7-IR) were both placed on injured reserve.

PROMOTIONAL NOTES:

The Condors are back in The Nest to host the Alaska Aces for a pair of games this weekend, each slated to start at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. Prior to both games, there will be pre-game parties on the Rabobank Arena Plaza. The parties will start at 5 p.m. on both nights, and will feature complimentary hot dogs and chances to win great Condors prizes, including a team-signed jersey and autographed sticks and pucks.

Friday's game will feature the My 45 and California Water Service Beachball Giveaway. The first 2,000 fans, 12-and-under, will receive a Condors Beachball!

In addition, Friday will be Season Ticket Referral Night at The Nest. Season ticket holders received complimentary rinkside or executive tickets to be used for this game to share the experience of Condors hockey with friends and recruit additional season ticket holders.

Saturday's game will be the KGET-TV 17, 98-5 KBKO & McDonald's Youth Jersey Giveaway. The first 2,000 kids, 12-and-under, will receive a replica #4 David Kudelka youth jersey!

Immediately following Saturday's game, all season ticket holders are invited to the lower level for the exclusive Season Ticket Holder Meet the Team Party.

March Monday Madness continues on Monday, March 17 when the Condors face off against the Stockton Thunder. In addition to all the craziness of March Monday Madness, it will be St. Hatricks Day. One lucky fan will win $5,000 if a Condors player scores a Hat Trick or $10,000 if a Condors player scores a consecutive or natural Hat Trick. Doors open at 6 p.m., puck drops at 7 p.m.

The first 2,000 fans on Monday will also receive the third magnet, featuring Mark Derlago, of the five-piece March Monday Madness Magnet Collectors Series. A new magnet is handed out at each March Monday Madness game.
