Bakersfield Condors News Release

VICTORIA, B.C. - The Bakersfield Condors had leads of 1-0, 3-1 and 5-3 against the Victoria Salmon Kings, but couldn't hold them, and ultimately lost in a shootout, 6-5, Saturday night, in front of 4,813 at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

The Condors failed to score in the shootout, as Todd Griffith, Sean Venedam, Brett Lutes and Kevin St. Jacques all were stopped by Bryan Bridges. Milan Gajic and Wes Goldie beat Jamie Hodson to earn the victory for the Salmon Kings.

Bakersfield (22-11-4, 48 points) dominated the opening stanza and struck first at the 12:01 mark, as Todd Griffith scored for the second time in as many games since returning from Bridgeport to make it 1-0. Andrew Ianiero and Tyler Scott assisted on the goal, Griffith's 18th of the season.

Victoria (14-25-1, 29 points) was held without a shot for nearly 15 minutes to start the game, but they made the most of their first one, as Marc-Andre Bernier put it in the net on a power-play to tie the game. Bernier was all alone to the right of Jamie Hodson, and tucked home the rebound after Steve Lingren's blast from the point went off the post.

The Condors started the second session with a major-penalty man-advantage, and they made good use of it, scoring twice to take a 3-1 lead. Just 22 seconds in, Brett Lutes stole an outlet pass by Bryan Bridges, and put it back past the goaltender to give the Condors the lead. They stretched it to a two-goal margin when Josh Liebenow found Kevin St. Jacques alone on the doorstep, and the veteran tipped it home.

The Salmon Kings rallied toward the end of the period again, getting another power-play goal at 15:35, as Phil Cole's shot from the left point eluded Hodson to make it a 3-2 game.

Victoria tied it up at 2:40 of the third, when Wes Goldie intercepted a pass, came down the right wing, and blasted one past Hodson.

But Bakersfield responded just 48 seconds later, when Kevin Asselin nudged home a trickling puck after Tyler Liebel's shot was partially blocked.

The Condors thought they had iced the game a few minutes later, as Sean Venedam converted on a five-on-three advantage to make it 5-3.

But back came the Salmon Kings, as Goldie duplicated his feat from early in the period, this time scoring short-handed to trim the deficit to 5-4 at 15:23.

They came all the way back at 17:34, as on another power-play, Milan Gajic tapped in a feed from Derek Krestanovich to tie it at 5-5.

Notes: Lutes now has an eight-game points streak (6g, 6a), and Rodberg has a seven- game points streak (1g, 8a), with an assist in each of the contests.
