Alaska Aces News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - After completely dominating for 56 minutes, Stockton held off a late charge by the Alaska Aces to win 3-2 in front of 5,822 Sunday afternoon at Stockton Arena.
The Thunder, looking for their first victory over Alaska after eight consecutive defeats owned the first period, out-shooting the Aces 22-6 and taking a 2-0 lead on a tip-in by Troy Bodie at 7:04 and Tyler Spurgeon's 12th goal of the year 1:57 before the break. Bodie's goal, his 17th of the season, came on one of four Stockton power plays in the opening frame. Alaska goaltender Isaac Reichmuth continued to see plenty of work in the second period, allowing only Tim Verbeek's goal at 4:16 as the Thunder out-shot the Aces 16-8 while enjoying three more power plays.
Reichmuth's play (a career-high 42 saves) kept Alaska in the game, and the Aces finally awoke late in the third, as Joe Talbot buried his eighth goal in 13 games on a pass from Mike Scott off the rush to trim Stockton's lead to 3-1 with 3:03 remaining. With the extra attacker on and just 27 seconds left, Alaska pulled within 3-2 on Olivier Filion's 20th goal of the year, assisted by Scott and Kimbi Daniels.
The Aces failed to get another shot on goal, however, and saw their season-high six-game winning streak come to an end. Alaska (25-11-2) remains atop the 25-team ECHL despite only its third loss in its last 15 games on the road and its fifth in the last 26 overall. The two teams will see one another three more times in Anchorage at Sullivan Arena next week, beginning Wednesday and continuing Friday and Saturday at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are now available by calling 258-ACES or at www.alaskaaces.com.
