
Condors Halt RoadRunners, Win 5-3

PHOENIX, Ariz. - C Dave Bonk scored two goals to lead the Bakersfield Condors to a 5-3 victory against the Phoenix RoadRunners before 2,636 fans at U.S. Airways Center on Wednesday night. The Condors have now won three consecutive games and four of their last five.
bonkBoth teams exchanged power play goals in the first period, leaving the game tied, 1-1, through one. Phoenix (7-6-2, 16pts) got on the board first with a tally from C Matt Fornataro at 5:13. Eight minutes later, the Condors (6-7-1, 13pts) responded on the man-advantage, when Bonk lit the lamp for the fifth time this season. The Condors led in shots on goal, 13-5, after the opening frame.
D Martin Frechette broke the tie with a slap shot from the point that ripped through traffic into the net 1:53 into the second period, putting Bakersfield ahead, 2-1. F Matt Pope added to the Condors lead at 9:28, when he skated around the Phoenix defense into the slot, put a shot on goal and chipped in his own rebound. Bakersfield out-shot Phoenix, 18-12, in the period and led, 3-1, on the scoreboard entering the final frame.
The Condors blew the game open with a pair of quick goals to start the third period. Just 59 seconds into the stanza, Bonk struck for his second of the game, wristing the puck into the net from the slot. D Ryan Mahrle followed with his first goal as a Condor at 2:06 on a one-timer set up by RW Chad Painchaud, making it 5-1. Phoenix strung together two goals in the third, but Bakersfield held on to win, 5-3, out-shooting the RoadRunners, 45-31. G Dave McKee stopped 28 of 31 shots to earn his fourth win this season.
