Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A last-minute goal by the Victoria Salmon Kings led to a 4-3 shootout win over the Bakersfield Condors before 5,178 fans at Rabobank Arena Saturday afternoon. The Condors have collected points in each of their last six games (5-0-1).
Victoria (31-18-6, 68pts) netted an early power play goal at 2:14 to open the scoring in the first period. Bakersfield, however, promptly responded with a power play tally of their own, when F Dave Bonk netted his own rebound in the low slot for his 21st goal of the season. Victoria moved back ahead late in the first period, as RW Olivier Labelle pushed a rebound across the goal line to give the Salmon Kings a 2-1 lead through the first 20 minutes. G Dave McKee finished the period with 12 saves, as Victoria led in shots, 14-7.
The Condors (21-27-7, 49pts) mounted an attack in the second period, pelting Salmon Kings G Todd Ford with 23 shots in the frame and tying it up. Bonk notched his second of the night and 22nd of the season at 13:48 to make it 2-2, and Victoria would escape the barrage with a tie score intact.
Early in the third frame, Bakersfield appeared to go back in front for good. RW Chad Painchaud lit the lamp on a breakaway at 4:17 to lift the Condors to a 3-2 advantage. That lead would hold until the waning minutes. With the Condors shorthanded, Victoria pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker and potted the equalizer with just 60 seconds left on the clock. RW Wes Goldie scored his team-leading 41st of the season to make it 3-3 and send it to overtime.
The teams combined for just three shots on goal in overtime, and in the shootout, Victoria prevailed. F Danny LaPointe scored for Bakersfield, while the Salmon Kings scored twice on McKee to take the win.
