
Gladiators Fall to Sea Wolves in OT, 4-3

Biloxi, MS - The Mississippi Sea Wolves posted a 4-3 shootout win over the Gwinnett Gladiators on Saturday night at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Gwinnett opened up a 2-0 lead on Mississippi early in the first period but couldn't hold on as the Sea Wolves battled back and took a 3-2 lead on Gwinnett early in the third and went on to post the shootout win. Gwinnett falls to 22-23-6 on the season with the shootout loss.
Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead on the Sea Wolves on Jordan Fox's team leading 21st goal of the season. Fox walked off the left wing dasherboards into the slot and beat Sea Wolves netminder Ryan Munce over the shoulder for the goal. Adam Berti and Dan Sullivan notched assists on the goal at 3:07 of the first period for Gwinnett.
Tom Zanoski pushed the Gwinnett lead to 2-0 at 6:36 of the second period. Zanoski beat a Sea Wolves defenseman to a loose puck along the goal line and whacked the puck past an out-of-position Munce for the tally. Dirk Southern had an assist on the goal for Gwinnett.
Mississippi got on the board at the 9:37 of the first period to cut the Gladiators lead in half. Alexandre Parent was able to deflected a bouncing puck in the slot off his chest past Gladiators netminder Dan Turple for the goal. Mike Nesdill and Mathieu Melanson each had an assist on the tally for the Sea Wolves.
The Sea Wolves tied the game at two in the second period with the only goal of the stanza. Melanson notched his first goal of the game ripping a slapshot over the shoulder of Turple for the marker. Ryan Cruthers and Pat Oliveto had the assists on the goal at 4:56 of the season period for the Sea Wolves.
Mississippi took a 3-2 lead on the Gladiators early in the third period. Ryan Menei was able to rip a slapshot over the shoulder of Turple for the Sea Wolves goal. Jeremy Hall and Chris Zarb had the assists on the goal at 6:26 of the third period.
Zanoski notched his second goal of the game to tie the contest at three at 14:55 of the third period. Zanoski's goal forced overtime as he beat Munce from 20 feet out thorugh traffic for the marker. Pat Bateman and Brennan Turner had the assists on the goal for Gwinnett.
After a scoreless overtime period, Mississippi put the game away in the shootout posting two shootout goals over the Gladiators while Gwinnett got a lone shootout goal from Jeff Mason in the loss.
Dan Turple finished with 21 saves in the losing effort for Gwinnett while both teams were unsuccessful on three power play chances in the contest.
The Gladiators continue the 2008-09 season on Sunday, February 22, 2009 as they host the Florida Everblades at 4:05 p.m. at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Catch all the play by play action on WDUN, News Talk 550.
