Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
BILOXI, MS - A gritty, 35-save effort from Ryan Munce and a two-point night for Mathieu Melanson drove the Mississippi Sea Wolves to a 4-3 shootout victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators before 4,493 fans at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Saturday night.
The Gladiators jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, getting a goal just 3:07 into the first period from Jordan Fox. The visitors then took a 2-0 lead when Mississippi goalie Ryan Munce couldn't control the rebound of a shot from Gwinnett's Drik Southern and Tom Zanoski dove across the ice to bat the loose puck into the net at 6:36 of the first.
Mathieu Melanson's first goal of the game got the Sea Wolves on the board at 9:37 of the first period when his centering feed intended for Alex Parent bounced off Gwinnett goaltender Dan Turple and into the net.
Melanson notched his fourth goal in two games when he took a pass from Ryan Cruthers, walked to the top of the slot and blasted the puck through traffic and past Turple to tie the game at two-apiece at 4:56 of the second.
Ryan Menei made a nifty backhand move infront of Turple to bring the goaltender to the ice and pop the puck past him to give Mississippi a 3-2 lead at 6:26 of the third. At 14:55 of the third, Zanoski's second goal of the night on a deflection of a shot from pat Bateman drew the game back even at three.
Mississippi failed to score despite several chances on an overtime power play, and Ryan Munce stood tall through the shootout, stopping four-of-five shooters, while Ryan Cruthers and Mathieu Melanson scored in the first two round of the shootout to secure the 4-3 win for the Sea Wolves.
Munce made 35 saves and stopped four-of-five shooters in the shootout to earn the win, and the Sea Wolves were 0-for-3 on the power play.
The next broadcast of Sea Wolves hockey is tomorrow when the Sea Wolves host the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 CT, and will be heard on the B2 Networks and at www.msseawolves.com. The pre-game show presented by Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College will begin 15 minutes before the opening faceoff!
