Utah Grizzlies News Release

West Valley City, Utah - The Utah Grizzlies (20-17-6-9) held off the Stockton Thunder 2-1 on Saturday night at the E-Center beating them for the second-straight night. Over 200 dogs were in attendance for the team's third annual "Pooch on the Pond" game.

The Grizzlies played the majority of the contest with just 12 skaters and goaltender and Islanders prospect Peter Mannino had 40 saves in the final game of his conditioning assignment.

Rob Hennigar scored the games first goal at 11:23 of the first period with an unassisted shorthanded score. The Utah forward broke up a pass, and eventually ended up with a breakaway before beating Stockton goaltender Bryan Pitton. At 18:16 of the first period, Tim Verbeek made it 2-0 on a power-play goal, scoring his 24th of the year.

Four seconds into the first period, Utah's Will Bodine and Stockton's Adam Huxley fought, setting a tone for the whole period that included 14 penalties and also included a game misconduct and cross checking penalty by Stockton's Cleve Kinley resulting in his ejection.

Neither team scored a goal in the second period as Mannino continued his shutout stopping all 17 shots from the Thunder. After the period, Assistant Coach Jeff Dwyer recognized Andy Sertich, Tim Maxwell and Will Bodine for their great defense in the first two periods holding Stockton scoreless.

At 4:35 of the third period, Stockton made it 2-1 with a shorthanded goal, but that was not enough as Mannino and the Grizzlies held off Stockton for the remainder of the game.

"This was an epic win," said Grizzlies Head Coach Kevin Colley after the game. "I have seen a lot of games before but I have never seen this kind of bravery, heart and desire before."

The Grizzlies now hit the road for eight-straight games starting Tuesday in Boise. Face-off is scheduled for 7:10 p.m.

Utah returns home Wednesday, March 11 when they will host Idaho at 7:05 p.m.
