Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Bakersfield, CA - The Victoria Salmon Kings and Bakersfield Condors met on Saturday afternoon. Victoria started Todd Ford in net while Bakersfield countered with Dave McKee.

The Salmon kings jumped out early when the club counted a power play goal. Shaun Landolt took a pass from Aaron Brocklehurst and blasted a shot from the slot that beat McKee top corner glove side. The Condors would respond with a power play goal of their own when Dave Bonk found the rebound of an Andrew Thomas shot. Bonk was denied on his first two whacks at it, but not the third as he was able to slide the puck between Ford's skate and the post. Victoria made it 2-1 late in the frame. Defenseman Matt Kelly picked up the puck and raced down the left side. The Tottenham, ON native was able to dance by two defenders and moved in all alone. With not much room Kelly got away a shot, but could not beat McKee, but the rebound lay in the crease and with McKee unable to recover Olivier Labelle found the puck and chipped it in for the 2-1 lead. That's how the first period would end.

The Condors notched the only goal of the second period when a Chad Painchaud point shot was stopped by Ford. Mark Derlago collected the rebound and slid a cross-crease pass to a hard charging Bonk who put the puck in the net to tie the game. The Salmon Kings surrendered their most shots of the season in the second frame being out shot 23-7. The game was tied 2-2 through 40 minutes.

The third period saw the Condors jump out to their first lead of the game when Derlago would send Painchaud in on a partial break. Painchaud cut hard across the crease and went from his forehand to the backhand and slipped it up and over Ford for the 3-2 lead. After a penalty by the Condors' Matt Pope the Salmon Kings went to the power play with 2:07 remaining in the period. On the power play and with the net empty, Olivier Filion threw a puck out front that Kelly knocked to a wide open Wes Goldie who put the blocker side to tie the game at 3-3 with 1:00 remaining in the third period. Overtime was needed.

After the 5-minute extra period the team's remained deadlocked at 3-3. In the shootout the Condors' forward and Victoria native Danny Lapointe beat Ford to put the Condors up 1-0 through three rounds. Lapointe faked the shot then pulled the puck to his backhand and lifted it over Ford. The Salmon Kings' Curtis Billsten would tie the shootout up through four rounds when he faked a forehand shot, then faked a backhander before pulling it back and beating McKee with the forehand shot. In the fifth and final round Olivier Labelle beat McKee over his glove hand. Ford then manned the net as Derlago missed on the Condors final attempt. Salmon Kings 4 Condors 3 in a shootout.

Victoria finished 2-6=33.3% on the power play, while Bakersfield finished 2/3=66.7%. The Condors out shot the Salmon Kings 40-32.

The Salmon Kings continue their California road trip on Sunday afternoon in Bakersfield. The Kings will face the Condors at 2 p.m. The Salmon Kings return to the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday, March 11th to open a four-game set against the Ontario Reign.
