Condors escape with 3-2 shootout win over Steelheads
February 8, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release
Boise, Idaho - Condors' rookie goaltender Ryan Munce stopped all three shooters he faced in the shootout, as the Condors downed the Steelheads, 3-2, in front of 3,575 fans at Qwest Arena on Wednesday night.
The Condors first three shooters scored on their chances, allowing the Condors to win the shootout, 3-0. The shootout loss moves the Steelheads record to 25-15-6, while the Condors (19-17-5) earned their eighth road win of the season.
Marty Flichel scored the only goal for either side in the first stanza, as the Steelheads out-shot the Condors 14-5. Flichel picked up his 18th goal of the season at 6:42, when he poked home a rebound from the slot past Munce (31 saves). Left winger Janos Vas drew the only assist as he took the initial shot that bounced off Munce's pad to the uncovered Flichel.
The Condors tied the match at one midway through the second period, as Kevin St. Jacques scored on a rebound opportunity. With the visitors on the power play, Steelheads' goaltender Matt Yeats (30 saves) gave the puck away to Condors' defenseman Kevin Truelson, who was stationed at the right point. Truelson then fanned on his chance, but the puck took a bad hop off Yeats' pads right to St. Jacques.
Minutes later, Mathieu Brunelle gave the Condors their first lead at 16:23 of the period, when he ripped a shot through the five-hole of Yeats to make the score 2-1. Forwards Joel Irving and Mike Hofstrand were credited with the helpers on Brunelle's 11th of the season.
At the second intermission, the Steelheads trailed by one goal.
Steelheads' defenseman Tyler Kindle deadlocked the match at 2-2 with less than nine minutes left in regulation. Kindle gathered a Scott Burt offering and slipped into the Condors' slot. The Portage, Michigan native made the most of his opportunity, blasting the puck past the blocker of Munce for his fourth goal of the year.
Overtime was scoreless, with the Steelheads notching two of the six shots on net. Thus, for the third time in the last six games, the Steelheads headed to the shootout. Their shootout record is now 2-3, while the Condors are 6-3 in games that are tied after overtime. The Condors have now won both games of the season series. Munce stands at 17-10-4 on the season, while Yeats has a mark of 14-5-3.
The three-game series at Qwest Arena against the Condors continues on Friday, February 10. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck.
