Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - Another three-game series revved up at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, and the Long Beach Ice Dogs came growling. The Victoria Salmon Kings faced the second-ranked Pacific Division Dogs and felt the bite of a 4-0 loss.

Greg Hewitt started between the pipes for the Ice Dogs but suffered an injury 3:48 into the period, and was replaced by Jaroslav Halak. Three minutes later the Ice Dogs scored on the power play with a tic tac toe finished by Cory Urquhart. Long Beach increased their lead 2-0 when Forward Blake Robson fired a shot top corner over Netminder BJ Boxma.

Victoria out shot Long Beach 12-10 in the first frame-despite battling the man advantage twice and not having a power play of their own.

After the third Ice Dog goal at 3:45 into the second period, the Salmon Kings slid Rob McVicar into the crease for Boxma.

Justin Aikins added his second of the night in the third period to give the Ice Dogs the 4-0 lead. Winger KC Timmons and Centre Ryan Wade got the crowd of 3,634 cheering with chances on the power play mid way through the third, but the sprawling Halak found a way to protect the net, and hold the 4-0 win.

Victoria was 0-5 on the power play and Long Beach capitalized on two out of seven opportunities with the man advantage. Halak earned his seventh win and Boxma was handed his ninth loss. Long Beach edged Victoria in shots, 33-32.

The Kelly Cup and the man himself, Pat Kelly, will be recognized at a ceremony before the Friday night game at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. Attendees to game two, which starts at 7:00 p.m., may visit the Kelly Cup in the main entrance.
