Bakersfield Condors News Release
San Diego, Calif. - Lars-Peder Nagel tied the game late in the third period and Yutaka Fukufuji shut the door in the shootout as the Bakersfield Condors defeated the San Diego Gulls 3-2 in the shootout at the Sports Arena on Sunday night.
A pair of early power plays led to the first goals of the game. Brian Gornick redirected a shot from the point for the Gulls, giving him his ninth of the season and giving San Diego a 1-0 advantage. About five and a half minutes later the Condors tied the game up. Todd Alexander netted his sixth of the season on a two-man advantage and the period ended 1-1.
The two teams skated through a scoreless second stanza and heading into the third period still knotted at 1-1. In the third period San Diego took the lead when Sean O'Connor finished his own rebound for his 12th goal of the season in just 17 games, and making it 2-1. Inside the final five minutes of the game the Condors tied it up a second time. Lars-Peder Nagel banged in a rebound of Vlad Serov's shot for the equalizer, sending the game into extra time.
Neither team could score in overtime, with the Condors holding a 3-2 shot advantage in overtime and 33-28 in regulation. The Condors have outshot their opposition in 23 of their 30 games this season. In the shootout, Connor James and Kevin St. Jacques put Bakersfield in front, and Yutaka Fukufuji turned aside all four shooters for San Diego and Bakersfield remained unbeaten against the Gulls this season (4-0- 1).
Up next for the Condors is a six-game trek to the East Coast with games in Reading and Johnstown, Pennsylvania and Atlantic City and Trenton, New Jersey. They start in Trenton on Wednesday night at 4:05 p.m. Pacific Time. The Condors return home on Saturday, January 15th against Vegas once again for the final time they will be in town.
