Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings penalty box bench stayed very warm on Sunday afternoon at the Bear Mountain Arena, and the Salmon Kings suffered possibly their worst defeat of the season to the hands of West Division leading Long Beach Ice Dogs.

Salmon King forward Mike Josephson started the march and Victoria could never quite recover nor would they stop taking careless penalties that ended up costing them the game. Josephson's high-sticking infraction was closely followed by a Dale Purinton roughing minor and the Salmon Kings were down two men when the Ice Dogs beat Jason Stone for the first time. Mike Vellinga and Chris Kenady set up Evan Cheverie at 4:30 of the first.

At 9:43 Ryan Finnerty tipped a chest high shot from the point over Olivier Michaud. It would end up being Michauds only blemish in a spectacular game that he stopped 35 of 36 shots he faced.

It was another poor decision by Dale Purinton that put the Salmon Kings shorthanded for Paul Cardarelli's game winner. Bill Lindsay and Marco Rosa were credited with the assists on the play and the Ice Dogs never looked back. Chris Kenady notched his team leading seventeenth of the season and the Dogs went to the room up 3-1.

The Ice Dogs got two more in the second. The first came from Chevarie who got his second point of the game this time the set-up pass came from the stick of Chris Kenady. Then Lindsay got his second assist of the game setting up Marco Rosa who finished with a goal and an assist.

The Ice Dogs played a disciplined hockey game and the scoreboard showed it at the end, whereas the Victoria Salmon Kings did not learn their lesson and finished the game with 12 minor penalties. Defenseman Dale Purinton usually a crowd favorite finished the game with half of those minors and also a 10 minute misconduct. Purinton spent over one third of the game in the penalty box.

The Victoria Salmon Kings get a chance to stop their three game skid on Tuesday January 4, 2005 when New Jersey Devils star centre Scott Gomez visits Victoria with his hometown Alaska Aces for the first of two back to back at the Bear Mountain Arena. Game time has been moved to 8:00 p.m. PST to accommodate the IIHF World Junior Championships Gold Medal game. Go Canada Go.
