Gators outscored by Wolves 7-5

Bolixi, MS In the highest scoring game of the season, the Louisiana IceGators gave up two late 2nd period goals as the Sea Wolves took over momentum and the hockey game en route a 7-5 win Sunday in Biloxi.

     A wild first period resulted in 31 combined shots on net and 5 goals. Pascal Pelletier opened the scoring with a wrist shot from the left circle, glove side on Matt Underhill at 2:14 to give Louisiana the early lead. It was the rookie's 5th of the year. Randy Dagenais and Chris Heid assisted on the early goal. The Sea Wolves would respond and take the lead with two goals 33 seconds apart. At 4:16, Austin Miller's slap shot from the point, his 1st , tied the game at 1-1. Then at 4:49, Travis Lisabeth put a rebound past Nathan Marsters, his 7th, to make it a 2-1 game. Pat O'Leary blasted a glove side slap shot past Masters at 15:27, his 6th, to give Mississippi a two goal cushion. However, David Bararuk scooped home a backhander from the slot at 18:57 to make the score 3-2 after the first 20 minutes. For the Dallas Stars prospect, it was his 8th of the year, Heid and Wes Mason assisting on the goal. For the period, the Gators outshot the Wolves 16-15.

     Mississippi increased the lead to 6-4 after two periods as letdowns late in the 2nd hurt Louisiana. The Wolves took a 4-2 lead at 4:49 as Anthony Battaglia's rebound goal, his 10th, gave the home team a two goal advantage. The Gators bounced back at 6:51 as Dan Sullivan rifled a slap shot home from the right circle for his 3rd of the season and a one goal deficit at 4-3. Max Fortunus picked up the only assist on the marker. Defenseman Chris Heid tied the game at 4 with a slap shot from the left point at 13:10, Bararuk and Dagenais earning assists. The rest of the period would belong to the Sea Wolves as Battaglia scored a short handed goal, his 11th , on a 3 on 2 rush at 16:31. The Gators then gave up a goal with only 34 seconds left in the frame. On a 2 on 1, Lucas Drake put home yet another rebound goal, his 3rd, to make the count 6-4 after two. Mississippi out shot Louisiana 19-8 in the period.

     Wes Mason brought the Gators to within one at 5:18 as he knuckled in a rebound for his 15th of the season. The Gators would not get any closer as Jeff Hutchins wrist shot at 18:39 closed the night on a 7-5 Sea Wolves win. With the win Mississippi moves into 4th place in the South Division jumping over the IceGators for the 8th spot in the American Conference, the final playoff spot. Louisiana falls to 14-13-3 and 5th place in the South. The Gators were outshot 42-38, power plays were 0-2 for the Gators and 0-1 for the Sea Wolves.
