Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. â Mississippi Sea Wolves captain Louis Dumont scored a dramatic power-play goal with nine seconds remaining in regulation to ring in the new year with a 2-1 victory over the Pensacola Ice Pilots at the Pensacola Civic Center.
The win extends the Sea Wolves unbeaten streak on the road in regulation to seven games, with a 6-0-1 record over that span.
Pensacola has dropped two in a row and it was the first loss of the season for Ice Pilots rookie goaltender Todd Ford, who has his record drop to 8-1-0.
"We played a great road game and finished it off nicely," Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. "It was goaltenders battle and a great hockey game. We were determined to win. Hopefully we can keep it going against Louisiana at home tomorrow."
Pensacola (17-8-3, 37 points) struck first with a 5-on-3 power play in the first period. Tyler Beechey rifled a right point shot past Matt Underhill for his team-leading 15th goal of the season at the 9:01 mark. Corey Neilson and Jordan Krestanovich picked up assists.
Mississippi (14-12-2, 31 points) pressed for the equalizer with 15 shots in the second period. The best chance came on the penalty kill for the Sea Wolves, but Anthony Battaglia and Louis Dumont were both turned away by Ford, who stopped 22 shots through 40 minutes of action.
Sea Wolves' Jeff Hutchins solved Ford on the 23rd shot of the game. Hutchins intercepted a clearing attempt by Jason Beckett and snapped a shot over the right shoulder of Ford for his team-leading 15th goal of the campaign.
Still tied in the final minute, Pensacola's Dwayne Hay elbowed Battaglia in the Sea Wolves zone and was assessed an elbowing penalty at 19:04.
On the ensuring power-play, Dumont, extended his point streak to six games by depositing a rebound off an initial shot from Hutchins, with nine seconds left to secure the win. Kerry Ellis-Toddington also collected a helper.
Mississippi went 1-for-6 with the man advantage, while Pensacola converted on 1-of-7 power play chances. Sea Wolves outshot the Ice Pilots 38-34.
Additional note: Mississippi right wing Jay Legault failed to register a point, halting his career-high point streak at 11-games with six goals and 12 assists over that stretch.
The Sea Wolves return home for a 5:05 p.m. game tomorrow versus the Louisiana IceGators at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. It's Kids Day, allowing all children 12 and under a ticket for $5 each. There will also be a postgame party for all ages at the Village Sports Pub, Edgewater Village, Biloxi.
