Sarnia Sting News Release
SARNIA - The Sting dropped a 5-4 decision to the Western Conference leading Soo Greyhounds on Friday night in front of 2,671 fans at the RBC Centre.
Fans in attendance on Friday night were treated to some old-time hockey as the Sarnia Sting and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds battled right up to the final buzzer. The game featured 3 fights and 9 goals, with the Greyhounds scoring late in the 3rd to pick up the two points.
Both goaltenders saw their fair share of rubber in the game. Chatham native, Joseph Raaymakers turned aside 35 shots, earning the win for Sault Ste. Marie, and Sting goaltender picked up the loss despite making 38 saves of his own.
"It was a tough loss, we were right down to the end with a good Soo team," remarks Assistant Coach, Andy Delmore.
"We stuck to the game plan and the guys worked their tails off. Obviously we would have liked the two points, but it was unfortunate with them getting one late. We've got to learn to play a little better late in the game," adds Delmore.
The Hounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 20:00 with goals coming from rookie, Timmy Gettinger and overage centreman Jean Dupuy. The first period also saw rookie defenceman, Alex Black drop the gloves and square off against former Sting forward Bryan Moore.
Just 1:33 into the second Stanza, Gabe Guertler banged in a rebound, making it 3-0 for the visiting Greyhounds.
The Sting battled back in the 2nd with a short-handed goal from the stick of Stephen Pierog, and a powerplay marker from rookie phenom, Jakob Chychrun. Zach Core picked up the lone assist on Pierog's 13th of the season while Zacha and Kyrou drew the assists on Chychrun's 16th of the campaign.
The Sting outshot their opponents 19-11 in a second period that saw Bushnell and Boland shed the mitts, followed by a winded tilt between Brandon Lindberg and Keigan Goetz.
Once again, the Sting allowed an early goal in the 3rd period as Sergey Tolchinsky tapped in his 26th of the season on the powerplay.
Despite being down by 2 once again, the Sting showed resilience as Pavel Zacha put home his 16th of the season less than 3 minutes later. Then, with 10:37 remaining in the 3rd, Alex Renaud notched his 12th goal of the season, tying the game at 4 apiece.
Chychrun and Salinitri were credited with assists on the Zacha goal while Nikandrov and Spinozzi picked up the helpers on Renaud's tally.
Then, with just over a minute to go in the 3rd and final period, Gabe Guertler buried his second of the night, all-but sealing the deal for the Hounds.
The Sarnia Sting are back in action on Sunday afternoon at the RBC Centre when they play host to Tyler Bertuzzi and the Guelph Storm. For tickets and more information, contact the Box Office at (519) 541 1717.
