Kitchener Rangers News Release
Darby Llewellyn scored once and added a pair of assists for the Kitchener Rangers in a 5-4 shootout win over the Windsor Spitfires on Friday night. Dmitrii Sergeev and Ryan MacInnis each added goals in regulation and in the shootout to help the Rangers to victory.
The Spitfires took the early lead, opening the scoring four minutes into the first period. Veteran rearguard Patrick Sanvido pushed a rebound between the pads of Rangers starter Jake Paterson to record his third of the season. Assists on the play were credited to Lucas Venuto and Liam Murray.
Kitchener quickly evened the score, notching their first of the game just over a minute later. St. Louis Blues prospect Dmitrii Sergeev fired a sharp angle shot that bounced off a skate in front of the net and under goalie Alex Fotinos. Darby Llewellyn and Gustaf Franzen each picked up a point with helpers on the Russian rearguard's fifth of the year.
Llewellyn lifted the Rangers into the lead at 7:38, persevering at the top of the crease and burying a rebound behind Fotino's right skate. His fourth point in as many games was also his 18th goal of the season. Franzen earned his second point of the game with an assist, and rookie Adam Mascherin also recorded a helper on the play.
David Miller extended the Rangers lead to 3-1, jumping on a bouncing puck and snapping it by Fotinos for his 16th of the year. Doug Blaisdell and Ryan MacInnis recorded helpers on the play. The marker prompted a Winsdor goaltending change as Brendan Johnston took to the crease in relief of Fotinos.
The Spitfires closed their gap to a single goal with two minutes to play in the frame, capitalizing on a late power play opportunity. Freshman blueliner Jaden Chatfield took advantage of a scramble in front of the net, pouncing on a loose puck and potting his first career OHL goal. Hayden McCool and Jamie Lewis picked up the helpers.
The Rangers led shots on goal 19-12 after 20 minutes.
Lewis scored the lone goal of the second period, pulling the Spitfires into a 3-3 tie with 4:40 to play before intermission. The overage pivot collected the feed from Anthony Stefano in the slot and chipped a shot over Paterson to record his career-best 16th of the year.
Kitchener out-shot Windsor 9-7 in the middle frame.
MacInnis restored the Rangers lead early in the third, scoring on the man advantage. Llewellyn set up the Arizona Coyotes prospect with a cross ice pass, and the sophomore centre banked a shot off a defender in front and past Johnston for his 23rd of the season, tying him for the team lead. Llewellyn's helper was his third point of the night, and fifth point in his last four games.
Sam Povoroniouk's 14th goal of the season pulled the Spitfires even at 4-4 with 10 minutes to play. With his club on the power play, the former Kingston Frontenacs forward wired a shot past Paterson, with assists from Cristiano GiGiacinto and rookie Logan Brown.
The score remained knotted at 4-4 through the remainder of regulation, forcing the contest into overtime. The Spitfires led shots on goal 13-11 in the third period.
The deadlock persisted through the extra frame, sending the decision to a shootout. Each team fired three shots on goal in the overtime, with the Rangers finishing the night with a 42-35 overall advantage.
Brandon Robinson, MacInnis and Sergeev all scored for the Rangers in the shootout, lifting the team to a 5-4 win.
With the victory, the Rangers win the season series 3-1.
