Lake County Captains News Release
(EASTLAKE, OH) - The Lake County Captains (25-22) scored eight runs on nine hits but were doubled up in both departments with the West Michigan Whitecaps (21-26), scoring 16 runs on 18 hits, winning 16-8 on a sunny 65-degree night at Classic Park.
The scoring started on the very first pitch of the game, with a leadoff homer from West Michigan's Daniel Cabrera one of two home runs in the top of the first inning.
Lake County responded in the third. Korey Holland led off the inning and smacked a ball to deep left field, hitting his first home run of the season. Later in the inning, Joe Naranjo punched a triple down the left-field line and a Jhonkensy Noel sacrifice fly to center scored him to tie the game.
After two scoreless innings from starter Mason Hickman, the Whitecaps first two hitters reached in the fourth. Ben Malgeri singled scoring the go-ahead run and removing Hickman. The right-hander struck out five, allowing three runs on eight hits.
Zach Hart finished the fourth off, stranding two runners in scoring position. The fifth was a different story. Hart loaded the bases, and Josh Crouch took advantage blasting a grand slam making it 7-2. A fifth run was added on an RBI single, following a throwing error from Jordan Jones.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lake County narrowed the gap, as Joe Naranjo singled and then was followed by Jhonknesy Noel who lifted his 11th longball of the season over the right-field wall to make it 8-4.
Following a solo home run in the sixth and seventh, Lake County stormed a comeback, scoring four runs, all on two outs. With two runners on Noel, singled to plate a run, his fourth run batted in of the game. A wild pitch brought across Petey Halpin who reached on a single. After walks from Raynel Delgado and Christian Cairo, Angel Martinez singled up the middle to bring the game to 10-8.
The top of the eighth saw the highest scoring half inning of the game. The Whitecaps scored six runs off a bases-loaded walk, a three-run triple and a two-run home run allowed. Cade Smith permitted four walks and Damon Casetta-Stubbs two hits. The Captains went down 1-2-3 in the final two frames.
Game Four between Lake County and West Michigan is tomorrow Friday, June 3. First pitch is at 7:00 p.m. Following the game will be Friday Night Fireworks presented by Meijer.
