Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Davenport, Iowa - In a game that featured 38 hits, the Quad Cities River Bandits blew a six-run in the top of the ninth inning for their fourth-straight loss as they fell to the Beloit Sky Carp 13-11 on Thursday at Modern Woodmen Park.
The offense struck early and often for both teams, with Beloit taking an initial one-run advantage in the opening frame on a Will Banfield RBI-double against Noah Cameron, but Quad Cities wasted no time responding with RBI knocks from Diego Hernandez and Kale Emshoff to jump out 2-1 on Dax Fulton in the bottom half.
After the teams traded runs in the second and third, Beloit tied it up in the fourth on a Kyler Castillo RBI single, the last run allowed by Cameron, who gave up three with five strikeouts in his 4.0-inning start.
However, Quad Cities responded again, plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homer from Morgan McCullough and then back-to-back RBI doubles from Emshoff and Burle Dixon to take a 7-3 lead.
Fulton's start also ended after four innings, with the left-hander having allowed a season-high seven runs on 11 hits.
The fifth inning was the only frame not to feature runs in the contest, as Anthony Simonelli and Tyler Mitzel posted zeros before each allowing a pair of runs in the sixth. For the Sky Carp, an RBI triple from Dalvy Rosario followed by Bennett Hostetler's RBI double trimmed the Q.C. lead to 7-5, but Dillan Shrum's two-run shot in the bottom half again lifted the Bandits up by four.
In the seventh and eighth, the Bandits padded their lead with an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Herard Gonzalez and Shrum's third RBI on a double, while Simonelli became the game's only pitcher to toss consecutive scoreless innings to enter the ninth leading 11-6.
With Chase Wallace taking over on the mound, the Sky Carp busted open the frame with four-straight hits off the right-hander, including the second and third RBIs for Will Banfield. Two batters later Bennett Hostetler made it a three-run game with his second run-scoring knock of the frame, forcing Bandits' manager Brooks Conrad to remove Wallace after recording just one out.
The barrage didn't stop against Anderson Paulino however, as Kyler Castillo welcomed the righty with an RBI single to put the tying runs on base. Two batters later, Cody Morissette tied the game on the first pitch he saw, doubling in two runs and moving Marcus Chiu, the tying run, to third.
Quad Cities was able to prevent Beloit from taking the lead by throwing out Chiu out at home on Nasim Nunez's fielder's choice, but Victor Mesa Jr. came through with two outs and gave his team a 13-11 lead with a two-strike, two-run single.
In the bottom of the ninth, Tyler Tolbert and Hernandez reached as the tying runs for Quad Cities, but Chandler Jozwiak got Gonzalez and Emshoff to fly out and end the game.
Paulino (0-7), who gave up three runs including the go-ahead tallies in 0.2 innings got the loss for the Bandits, while Jozwiak (2-0) pitched 3.0 innings of one-run ball to earn the win for the Sky Carp.
Quad Cities will look to end a four-game losing streak tomorrow at Modern Woodmen Park tomorrow at 6:30pm with Eric Cerantola (0-0, 4.91) getting the ball for the Bandits against Beloit's Evan Fitterer (1-3, 5.23).
