DESTROYERS Last Week:
Georgia Force 68
Columbus Destroyers 50
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus wide receiver/linebacker Eddie Galles ran over a defender and had his helmet ripped off as he ran in for his first touchdown of the night in a losing effort as the Destroyers fell to the Georgia Force 68-50 in front of 10,801 fans on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena.
The game was a true quarterback challenge with Columbus quarterback John Kaleo completing 28-of-35 passes for 342 yards and five touchdowns and Georgia quarterback Matt Naggy completing 23-of-28 passes for 210 yards and seven touchdowns.
Georgia offensive specialist Chris Jackson earned Offensive Player of the Game honors after finishing the night with 10 receptions for 90 yards and four touchdowns. Force teammate Jamin Elliot won Ironman of the Game honors after recording six receptions for 56 yards and three touchdowns, as well as two tackles and one fumble recovery on defense. The Defensive Player of the Game Award went to Georgia offensive/defensive lineman Adam Metts for his two sacks for 13 yards.
Georgia got on the board first with a three-play drive, culminating with a six-yard touchdown reception by offensive specialist Jamin Elliot. Columbus would then fumble the ensuing kickoff, which was recovered by the Force in the endzone, bringing the score to 13-0 after a failed extra point.
Wide receiver/defensive back B.J. Barre ran one in from the 1-yard line for a score to cut the lead to 27-13. After a Georgia score, Columbus fullback/linebacker Chris Browning pounded his way into the endzone from two yards out. Kaleo and offensive specialist Carl Bond would proceed to convert on the two-point conversion, bringing the score to 34-21. The first half would end with a 23-yard field goal by Mark Lewis and a 40-24 score.
The Destroyers offense came out firing in the third quarter, scoring on a 41-yard Kaleo pass to Barre. Georgia would respond with a touchdown of their own before Columbus would score again, this time on a 48-yard drive resulting with a 16-yard touchdown reception by offensive/defensive lineman Ken Jones, bringing the score to 47-38. The nine-point differential would be the closest the Destroyers would come to, finishing the night with a 68-50 loss.
THIS WEEK's OPPONENT:
The Philadelphia Soul, most notably known for majority owner Jon Bon Jovi, was approved to join the Arena Football League on July 10, 2003. Less than a year later, the Soul took the field for the first time in a Feb. 8, 2004, battle against the New Orleans VooDoo. The Soul lost the game 42-34.
This season, the Soul has started off 4-3 and has struggled on the road. Of the Soul's three losses, all have come on the road.
The Soul and Destroyers both have one divisional win and both earned that victory over the New York Dragons. This only is the second Eastern Division game for the Soul, who will play five divisional games in their final eight games of the season.
The Soul is led by quarterback Tony Graziani, who is in his sixth season. Graziani has quickly become one of the AFL's top quarterbacks. In five-plus seasons, Graziani has passed for over 17,000 yards and is closing in on 400 passing touchdowns.
Eddie Moten powers the defense, leading the team in tackles with 41.0 (34UT-14AT). He has three interceptions and nine pass breakups on the season.
LAST MEETING WITH PHILADELPHIA:
PHILADELPHIA - It was an interesting series between the Philadelphia Soul and Columbus Destroyers during the 2005 season. The Soul defeated the Destroyers 62-45 at Nationwide Arena early in the season, but it was the Destroyers who got the best of the Soul in Philadelphia.
The Destroyers took home a 55-52 victory in front of 17,092 fans at the Wachovia Center on May 15, 2005. Quarterback Matt D'Orazio passed for 283 yards and six touchdowns on 28-of-43 passing and added a rushing touchdown to lead the Destroyers and earn Offensive Player of the Game honors.
Damien Groce hauled in 12 of those passes for 123 yards and a score, while Cornelius White had seven receptions for 61 yards and three touchdowns.
The Destroyers jumped out to a 14-7 lead after the first quarter of play. The Soul fought back and entered the locker room at halftime tied 31-31.
It remained tied after three quarters and for much of the fourth quarter, but kicker Steve Videtich broke the tie with a 20-yard field goal to give Columbus the win.

DESTROYERS NOTABLES:
DROP BACK
The Columbus Destroyers could not overcome a 27-7 first half deficit as they fell 68-50 in front of 10,801 fans on Huntington Field at Nationwide Arena on Friday night. Quarterback John Kaleo completed 28-of-35 passes for 342 yards and five touchdowns in the loss. Wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders led the receiving corps with eight receptions for 70 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Georgia was led by Chris Jackson, who had 10 receptions for 90 yards and a game-high four touchdowns. Destroyers offensive/defensive lineman Ken Jones caught a pair of passes, including a 4-yard touchdown reception.
FORWARD MOTION
The Destroyers will hit the road for the first of back-to-back road games. The first will come against the defending ArenaBowl champion Colorado Crush, who have started the season 6-1 and are winners of three straight. Kickoff at the Pepsi Center is set for 9 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Mar. 25. The Destroyers and Crush have met once in history with the Crush defeating the Destroyers 52-37 on Mar. 20, 2005. The Destroyers will take on the Eastern Division leading Dallas Desperados, on Saturday, Apr. 1. Kickoff at American Airlines Center is set for 7:30 p.m. (ET). Both games will be broadcast on FSN Ohio.
HEAD COACHES
DOUG KAY: The Destroyers hired Doug Kay as head coach on July 14, 2005. Kay is in his first season in Columbus and brings 12 years of Arena Football coaching experience. In 10 of his 12 seasons, Kay's teams have qualified for the playoffs, including two ArenaBowl championships. Kay also has coached the Charlotte Rage (1995) and the Carolina Cobras (2000-01).
BRET MUNSEY: In his first season as the head coach of the Philadelphia Soul, Bret Munsey has gotten the Soul off to a 4-3 start and right in the thick of the Eastern Division battle. Munsey, who is in his first head coaching gig, joins the Soul after spending the previous three seasons with the Orlando Predators. He also has coached the Carolina Cobras (AFL) and Tennessee Valley Vipers (af2) and began his coaching career with the Augusta Stallions (af2) in 2000. That season as the defensive coordinator, he helped guide the Stallions to a 13-3 record and an American Conference championship. Munsey played in one AFL game in 1991 for Orlando.
MAJOR DISTRIBUTOR
Destroyers' quarterback John Kaleo has increased his yardage output each week, including a season-high 342 passing yards this past weekend against the Georgia Force. Kaleo completed 28-of-35 passes, five of which went for touchdowns. He did not throw an interception. Friday marked the second consecutive week that Kaleo has passed for over 300 yards. Of the 28 completions, Kaleo dished out passes to six different receivers, all six with at least two receptions. Offensive specialist Carl Bond had five receptions for a team-high 81 yards, while wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders had a team-high eight receptions for 70 yards and two touchdowns.
BIG MAN FINDS ENDZONE
It's not every day that an offensive/defensive lineman finds himself in the end zone at any level of football. But Destroyers offensive/defensive lineman Ken Jones found his way into end zone on a 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback John Kaleo. It was Jones' second reception on the day. His first went for 16 yards and almost a score. Defensively, Jones had an assisted tackle for a loss. It was Jones' third TD reception of his career.
ROOKIE'S DEBUT
The 2006 season has been a season full of rookie debuts for the Columbus Destroyers. Wide receiver/defensive back B.J. Barre, offensive/defensive lineman Howard Duncan, and fullback/linebacker Harold Wells all have made their debut this season. This past weekend, offensive/defensive lineman Brad Greetis and wide receiver/defensive back Lance Taylor made their Arena Football League debuts. Taylor caught five passes for 69 yards and added three tackles (1UT-3AT) on defense. Greetis had an assisted tackle in his first career game.
PERFECT RUN COMES TO AN END
Destroyers kicker Mark Lewis was on a roll. For the first time this season, Lewis missed an extra point. It came with 9 minutes, 51 seconds, remaining in the second quarter. The miss was Lewis' first since the end of the 2005 season. Lewis started the season making his first 14 and his first of the game this past weekend. Dating back to last season, Lewis connected on 16 consecutive extra points. In four games this season, Lewis has hit 17-of-19 extra points. He missed three games do to an injury to his right foot. Emergency kicker Danny Kight, a journeyman kicker, filled in nicely for Lewis. Kight only missed two extra points, both of which were blocked and was 15-for-17 in the three games he has played in.
KICKIN' BACK
Speaking of kicking, the Destroyers have combined to be one of the League's best. On the season, between kickers Mark Lewis and Danny Kight, the Destroyers have connected on 7-of-16 field goals. The seven made field goals ties the Destroyers for fourth-best in the AFL. Lewis ranks third in field goal percentage (50.0). The team has combined to make 32-of-36 PAT's, as well.
OH WHAT A KNIGHT
Nothing like signing with a new team and playing against your former team in your first game with your new team. Offensive specialist Marcus Knight, who was signed by the Columbus Destroyers on Mar. 13, will play his first game this weekend, and it will come against none other than the team he started the 2006 season with, the Philadelphia Soul. Knight played in six games for the Soul this season and was the team's leading receiver. He caught 44 passes for 476 yards and four touchdowns. He also was the team leader in kick returns with 12 for 190 yards. Knight played in 11 games for the Soul in 2005 and finished third on the team in receiving. He caught 64 passes for 886 yards and 23 touchdowns. Defensively, he added 22.5 tackles (18UT-9AT), forced three fumbles, recovered four fumbles and had two pass breakups. Knight spent four seasons in the National Football League, spending three seasons with the Oakland Raiders and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played in Super Bowl XXXVII for the Raiders, where he returned kickoffs.
RUNNIN' AWAY
A running game is not something that dominates a game plan in the game of Arena Football, but the running game is utilized from time to time. The Destroyers are a team that uses the running game effectively. The Destroyers boast the AFL's seventh-best team when it comes to rushing. In seven games, the team has rushed the ball 60 times for 153 yards and 10 touchdowns. The team that leads the League in rushing is the Destroyers opponent this weekend, the Philadelphia Soul. On the season, the Soul has rushed the ball 92 times for 248 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Destroyers are led by fullback/linebacker's Leroy Thompson and rookie Harold Wells. In five games this season, Wells has rushed 49 yards and a team-leading three touchdowns on 16 carries. Thompson leads the team in rushing yards with 73 on 26 attempts. He has rushed for two scores as well. Quarterback John Kaleo is tied with Wells for the team lead in rushing touchdowns, as he has rushed for three scores on the season.
BIG RETURN ON INVESTMENT
The Columbus Destroyers continue to dominate on kickoff returns. Through seven games this season, the Destroyers have ranked in the Top 5 in all kickoff return categories. The Destroyers have returned 42 kickoffs for a total of 838 yards. The 838 yards is second-best in the Arena Football League. Their average of 22.0 is good enough for third-best behind Austin (22.7) and Arizona (21.1). The team has come awfully close each week in returning a kickoff for a touchdown, but are still awaiting their first kickoff return for a touchdown. Eight of the League's 18 teams have returned a kickoff for a touchdown this season. The Destroyers also have returned one missed field goal 28 yards. It came in Week 1 against the Grand Rapids Rampage. The Destroyers rank third in missed field goal returns.
NOT FAR BEHIND
Destroyers' defensive specialist Jerald Brown has been a pest to opposing quarterbacks this season. Brown, who is second on the team in tackles with 26.0 (19UT-14AT), has helped the Destroyers defense rank as one of the Top 5 in the League. He has five interceptions on the season, which is good enough for third-best in the AFL, behind League-leaders Monty Montgomery (Nashville) and Damon Mason (Austin), who both have six interceptions on the year. Brown has returned the five interceptions for 108 yards (second-best). He also has returned a fumble recovery 40 yards for a touchdown. As well as the interceptions and fumble recoveries, Brown has added five pass breakups.
DOING THINGS BOTH WAYS
Destroyers' wide receiver/linebacker David Saunders is doing everything he can on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. Playing in only five games this season, Saunders has 23 receptions for 241 yards and five touchdowns. He is third on the team in receptions and yards while ranking second on the team in touchdowns. On the defensive side of things, Saunders has added 9.5 tackles (6UT-7AT) and two pass breakups from the "jack" linebacker position. Saunders is on pace to haul in 64 receptions for the season, which would rank as a career-best.
WHEN IT HAPPENS, IT'S GOOD
Sometimes, the numbers don't lie. That has been the case a few times for the Destroyers this season. When the Destroyers score first they have yet to lose. The same holds true when the Destroyers are leading after the first, second and third quarters. The Destroyers have led after the first quarter twice, and won both games. They have led at halftime twice and after the third quarter twice, again, coming out on top in both games. Another key to the rushing game is that when the Destroyers rush for 20 yards or more, they are 3-1 on the year. When quarterback John Kaleo completes passes for 100 yards or more to one receiver, the Destroyers boast a 2-0 record.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
The Destroyers notched their first win in the month of March in team history when the defeated the New York Dragons earlier this month. Prior to the Mar. 3, come from behind victory, the Destroyers were 0-13 in March.
FAMILIAR FACES
When the Destroyers and Soul hit the field tonight, a familiar face will be across the bench from them. Soul offensive coordinator Jim Kubiak played for the Buffalo Destroyers in 2001. Kubiak ranks second on the Destroyers career list in attempts (484), completions (295), yards (3,787) and touchdowns (64). His 270.5 yards per game average has him atop the Destroyers all-time career list. He also rushed for three touchdowns that season, while leading the Destroyers to a 6-8 record.
