Nashville Kats News Release

NASHVILLE (Mar. 14, 2006) - The Nashville Kats have traded veteran defensive specialist Khalil Carter to the Orlando Predators for rookie wide receiver/defensive back Jermaine Mays.

"Khalil has been a very good player for us over the last couple of years," said Kats head coach Pat Sperduto. "We felt like we needed to shake things up a little bit, and we are very excited to be getting a young player the caliber of Jermaine Mays. He is a guy that we feel like can help our team right away and for many years to come."

Mays (5-11, 200) played college ball at the University of Minnesota and spent time in NFL Europe and with the NFL's Minnesota Vikings before making the move to the AFL this year. The 26-year old rookie started the first four games of the season at the WR/DB spot for Orlando, logging 24 tackles and four pass breakups in addition to three receptions for 22 yards. He also had one interception, which he returned 24 yards for a touchdown against Kansas City on Feb. 3.

Carter leaves the Kats after earning second-team All-Arena honors at defensive specialist in 2005. Last season, he posted 70 tackles and had seven interceptions. This year, he played in five games with Nashville and had 34.5 tackles, one INT and a fumble recovery.

The trade will likely see the shift of second-year player Rober' Freeman over to the defensive specialist position, at least until Monty Montgomery returns next week from the injury to his right middle finger. Reggie Stephens will continue to serve as one starting defensive specialist.

In addition to the trade, the Kats also signed quarterback Glen Gauntt to serve as Leon Murray's backup while Clint Stoerner heals from his leg injury. A fourth-year player out of South Florida, Gauntt played two years with the Dallas Desperados, serving as the starter in 2004 when he completed 60.2 percent of his passes for 3,009 yards, 58 TD's and 11 interceptions. Last season, he was the backup for a Georgia Force squad that advanced to ArenaBowl XIX, completing 15-of-18 passes for four TD's and no interceptions. Gauntt had been with the Las Vegas Gladiators earlier this season.

The Kats (4-3) have lost two in a row and return home to face the Chicago Rush in a key Central Division battle on Friday at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.
