Orlando Predators News Release
ORLANDO, Fla. (March 14, 2006) -- The Orlando Predators acquired veteran defensive back / wide receiver Khalil Carter, who earned second team All-Arena honors last season, from the Nashville Kats today. In exchange for the fourth-year veteran, the Predators sent rookie WR/DB Jermaine Mays to the Kats.
"Khalil is a proven AFL veteran, who has made a lot of plays," Predators Head Coach Jay Gruden said. "He is a tough, physical player who should be able to step in and help us immediately."
Carter has played in five games this season for Nashville, recording 34.5 tackles with an interception and fumble recovery. He has been used mainly as a defensive specialist for Nashville, but will play both ways with the Predators.
In 13 games with Nashville last season, he posted 70 tackles on defense with seven pass interceptions, 15 pass break-ups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in being named to the second unit of the All-Arena team. He also played for Milwaukee (2001) and Toronto (2002) in his AFL career, in addition to being named "Defensive Player of the Year" with the Arkansas Twisters of the "arenafootball2" league in 2003, when he led that league in interceptions with 14.
Carter actually was on the Predators roster prior to the 2004 season, when he was signed as a free agent on October 18, 2003. But Carter signed with the NFL Buffalo Bills before the start of Predators training camp. He was then signed by the Nashville Kats as a free agent prior to the 2005 season.
He is expected to play this week for the Predators against Dallas.
Mays played in four games for the Predators, catching three passes for 22 yards. On defense, he had 24 tackles with an interception and four pass defenses. He had one touchdown, returning the interception 24 yards for a score against Kansas City.
