Colorado Eagles News Release
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW
Tuesday, January 10; Costello Returns From AHL; Forward Still Leads ECHL in Points Despite Two Week Absence
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles of the ECHL announced today that forward Chad Costello has been returned from loan by the Springfield Falcons of the AHL. Despite last playing for Colorado on December 23, Costello still ranks as the ECHL's leading scorer with 48 points. He also ranks first with 32 assists and is tied for first with a +19 plus/minus rating.
Costello, who saw limited ice time in four games with the Falcons, had this to say about his return to the Eagles roster: "I can't wait to get back to pulling on an Eagles jersey and playing at the Budweiser Events Center. After spending time in the AHL, I realize even more just how great this Eagles team is, and that we have a lot of very talented players. I'm excited to re-join them and to be a part of what we all hope will be a very successful second half of the season."
Wednesday, January 11; Hats Off For Costello in his ECHL/Eagles Return
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Utah Grizzlies, 5-1, behind Chad Costello 's four point night (3-1-4) and Andrew Penner's sharp play in net (24-of-25). Costello's big night came in his return to the Eagles' lineup after a two week stint in the AHL, and the league's leading scorer picked up where he left off.
Thursday, January 12; Landry Loaned to Bridgeport of AHL, Maxwell Re-Assigned
LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles, proud affiliate of the NHL's Winnipeg Jets & the AHL's St. John's IceCaps, announced today that defenseman Jon Landry has been loaned to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL, and that forward Tommy Maxwell has been re-assigned to the Eagles through their affiliations.
Landry ranks 2nd in the ECHL in points among defensemen (30), trailing teammate Aaron Schneekloth by just one point, and he's tied with Schneekloth with the most goals (12) among defensemen. This will be his second career stint in the AHL; he played two games with the Portland Pirates at the tail end of the 2005-06 season after completing his academic career at Bowdoin College.
Maxwell has spent time on both the IceCaps' & Eagles' rosters this season, recording 10 penalty minutes in four games in the AHL and five points (1-4-5) & 69 PIMs in 15 games in the EHCL.
Friday, January 13; Friday the 13th Certainly Unlucky for Eagles in Loss to Condors
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors doubled-up the Colorado Eagles, 4-2, in the first game of a weekend set between the teams. The Condors, who entered the game with the worst record in the league, got two goals from their power play, which also entered the game as the worst in the league, as they were able to take advantage of odd rebounds all night long.
Saturday, January 14; Eagles Just Out of Condors' Long Reach in 3-1 Win
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Colorado Eagles defeated the Bakersfield Condors, 3-1, as Kyle Jones stopped 41 of 42 shots to pick up his 16th win of the season. The victory gave the Eagles a weekend split of the series in Southern California.
THE WEEK AHEAD
Monday, Jan. 16; Colorado Looks to Continue Winning Big in Las Vegas
Colorado will play an afternoon affair in Las Vegas on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, marking just the third Monday game in franchise history (both of the previous came during the 2007-08 season). The Eagles are 2-1-0 in Sin City, accounting for two of the Wranglers' three regulation losses at home so far this season. That outstanding home record (15-3-2) has helped the Wranglers to the 2nd-most points (50) in the ECHL. They trail only Alaska (63), which is the only team in the league with a better home ice advantage (23-3-0).
Friday, Jan. 20 & Saturday, Jan. 21; Eagles Renew Acquaintances With Reign
The Eagles and Reign will face-off for the first time since the first weekend in November when they play a pair of games in Southern California this weekend. Colorado is just 1-2-0 against the Reign this season, but the home team has yet to win in the season series. The Eagles enter the week just four points ahead of Ontario in the Western Conference, although the Reign have a game in hand.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
ON THE ROAD AGAIN - The Eagles are in the midst of a five-game stretch that will include their only games away from the Budweiser Events Center this month. They've faired quite well away from home, posting a record of 11-6-3; the 25 road points are the most in the Western Conference & tie Reading for most in the ECHL. Colorado is 2-1-0 in Las Vegas, accounting for 66% of the Wranglers' home regulation losses this season (15-3-2).
WILD WEST SHOOTOUTS - Games between the Eagles and Wranglers have been offensive showcases, with the teams combining for eight goals or more in each of their five meetings. So far in the season series, the teams have combined for 49 goals in 5 games, an average of nearly 10 goals per contest. Las Vegas owns a 26-23 edge in goals, having put up nine & seven in two of the meetings.
MONTHLY OPPONENTS - Last month it was Utah, this month it's Las Vegas. The Eagles played the Grizzlies seven times in December, including in each of their four home games. This month, Colorado will become familiar with the Wranglers as six of the Eagles' 11 games will be played against them. Today's match-up is the only one of the five not being played in Colorado.
THE GAMBLER - Since the calendar turned to December, Michael Forney has been one of the hottest players on the Eagles' roster. In the 19 games since, he's gone without a point just three times, and has accumulated 22 of his 32 points this season. He should continue to have a strong month of January, as he's also the team's leading point producer against the Wranglers with seven points in five games.
POWER OUTAGE - Oh, the ebbs & flows of special teams; the Eagles power play unit is in a slump at the moment. Colorado hasn't scored a man-advantage marker in its past four games -- going a combined 0-16 -- and is now at 20% on the season. The slump has come after the unit was clicking at a season high 22.3% overall five games ago.
HE'S A WINNER - Four of Kevin Ulanski 's 11 goals this season have been game-winners (36%), including each of his past two in each of Colorado's last two wins. Furthermore, since Ulanski joined the Eagles' lineup on Nov. 26th, the team has gone 13-5-3, meaning that he's scored the game-winner in nearly 1/3 (31%) of Colorado's wins since joining the team. That's nothing new for Ulanski, who led the CHL last season with 11 game-deciding tallies. He also ranks 4th on the Eagles' all-time list with 27 game-winners, accounting for 26% of his 104 overall goals with the Eagles.
OTHER HAPPENINGS
Silver Skater Fantasy Team - In lieu of an All-Star Game this season, the ECHL and the MeiGray Group are giving fans the opportunity to vote for players to comprise the 2012 Fantasy Team. The top two vote-getters on each team will wear a team jersey with a dramatic and unique silver team crest and event patch during the designated dates.
