Colorado Eagles News Release
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW
Thursday, October 27; IceCaps Assign Tommy Maxwell to Eagles
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Colorado Eagles, proud affiliate of the NHL's Winnipeg Jets & the AHL's St. John's IceCaps, announced today that forward Tommy Maxwell has been assigned to the team. Maxwell is entering his 6th professional season, having spent most of his career at the AHL level.
Maxwell (6-foot-2, 200-pounds) has played a total of 247 pro games, 151 coming in the AHL, mostly with the Manitoba Moose. For his career, the right-handed shooting forward has recorded 46 points (17-29-46) and 781 penalty minutes, including two seasons with over 200 PIMs.
He traveled to Las Vegas, Nev. to meet the team yesterday, and took part in their pre-game skate today. Colorado will take on the Wranglers tonight and tomorrow night to start a three-game road trip that will end in Ontario, Calif. on Saturday.
Thursday, October 27; Eagles Surge in 3rd Again for Comeback Win in Vegas
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Colorado Eagles scored four goals in the final period to claim a come-from-behind, 5-3, win in their first trip to Las Vegas. Jack Combs notched the game-winner with a shorthanded tally, and Kyle Jones stopped 38 shots in the victory. The teams will play again Friday night in the second half of their week-ending set.
Friday, October 28; Lampe Lights Lamp 4 Times; Las Vegas Wins 9-3
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Eric Lampe scored four goals on five shots, helping lead the way as Las Vegas defeated Colorado, 9-3, tying the Eagles' record for most goals allowed in a game. Judd Blackwater also had a strong night statistically, netting two power-play goals as the Wranglers went 3-for-8 with the man advantage.
Saturday, October 29; Slattengren Gets Game-Tying & -Winning Goals in Eagles' OT Win
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Colorado Eagles, playing their third game in as many nights, defeated the Ontario Reign in overtime, 4-3, in the teams' first meeting. The Eagles got two goals from defensemen, scored on three power plays, and bounced back from a record-trying loss the night before thanks in large part to Aaron Slattengren 's two tallies.
THE WEEK AHEAD
Friday, Nov. 4 & Saturday, Nov. 5; Ontario Reign Make First Trip to Colorado for Weekend Set
The Eagles & Reign will play their second and third games against each other in a row this weekend when the Reign make their first trip to the Budweiser Events Center. In the Eagles' first trip to Ontario last weekend, Colorado came up with a come-from-behind, overtime victory, getting three power-play goals and two tallies from Aaron Slattengren (including the game-tying and game-winning goals). Colorado enters the week 3rd in the Mountain Division (4-3-0), while Ontario enters the week 3rd in the Pacific Division (2-2-1).
NOTABLE NUMBERS
LATER RATHER THAN SOONER - The Eagles have established a trend of starting slow and finishing strong early this season. They've been out-scored by a total of 11-3 in the first frame, but they've scored 15 of their 25 total goals in the third period or overtime (60%). Only Idaho has allowed more first period goals (12), while South Carolina is the only other ECHL team to record double-digit goals (11) in the third and later.
DYNAMIC DUO - Jack Combs & Chad Costello combined for 166 points last season as linemates with the Tulsa Oilers. This season, their chemistry is apparent once again as they are both among the ECHL's leaders in several categories entering the week. Costello is 2nd in points (12), 1st in assists (9) & tied for 2nd in shots (32). Combs is tied for 3rd in points (11), tied for 2nd in goals (6) & 1st in short-handed goals (2).
BOUNCE-BACK ABILITY - The Eagles surrendered a team record-tying nine goals last Friday, but they've shown a great ability to move past such losses. With their win the following night in Ontario, Colorado is now 3-0 following games in which they've allowed nine goals. The previous two instances: On Feb. 17, 2007, the Eagles lost 5-9 to the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs, only to flip the script and defeat the Tulsa Oilers 9-1 in their next game. And on Feb. 6, 2010, Colorado lost 4-9 to the Odessa Jackalopes, then defeated the Tulsa Oilers (again) 4-3 in their following game.
POWER SURGE - The Eagles' power play had a big hand in Saturday night's overtime win against Ontario, scoring three goals in the 4-3 win. By going 3-for-6 in the game, Colorado matched its total number of power-play goals through the season's first six games. On the season, the Eagles' power play ranks in the middle of the ECHL pack (10th) with a conversion rate of 18.2%.
HE WAS DUE - Aaron Slattengren played hero Saturday night, scoring the game-tying and game-winning goals against the Reign. It shouldn't have come as much of a surprise, however, that he'd play a positive role in the game. Entering the contest the steady point-producer -- he's averaged over a point-per-game in his ECHL career -- had failed to register a point in his previous three games, and a fourth game without a point would have matched his longest point-less streak in the ECHL.
KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES - Goalie Kyle Jones has been very good early in the season, ranking among the top-5 in the ECHL in wins (4, T-2nd), saves (178, 2nd) and minutes played (329, 4th). With his win last Saturday, he is now tied for the 4th-most wins in Eagles history with Tyler Weiman & Ryan Bach, both of whom made it to the NHL. Among Eagles netminders with at least 32 games played, Jones has the 2nd-best save percentage all-time (.917).
