
Cogan pitches gem in 3-1 win

St. Joseph, MO - Tony Cogan (4-1) went the distance to pitch the Canaries to a 3-1 win over the St. Joe Blacksnakes on Thursday night. Cogan allowed one run on seven hits while walking one and striking out five.
The Canaries (15-30) drew first blood in the first inning. Leadoff man Dustin Delucchi doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chad Hermansen to give the Canaries a 1-0 lead.
The Blacksnakes (24-21) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. Denver Kitch tripled and scored on a single by Scooter Jordan to even the game, 1-1.
The Birds took the lead in the fifth. Chris Weber tripled and scored on a single by Jason Sugden. Sugden's 14th RBI of the season gave the Canaries a 2-1 lead.
In the seventh inning, the Canaries added an insurance run. Weber singled and scored his second run of the game on a base hit by Delucchi for the 3-1 final.
Cogan picked up the win for the Canaries. Mark Nussbeck (4-2) threw a complete game allowing three runs on six hits in the loss.
The Canaries return home on Friday to face the Sioux City Explorers in the final series of the first half. Friday's game with mark the Canaries "Baseball Cap Giveaway" presented by Modern Woodmen of America.
