Pelicans to play biggest series of first half

June 29, 2006 - American Association (AA)
Pensacola Pelicans News Release

This three game series against the Pensacola Pelicans and St. Joe Blacksnakes will be the only meeting between the two teams in the regular season. Going into Thursday's games against St. Paul, the Pelicans are tied with Coastal Bend and Fort Worth for first place in the American Association Southern Division. With only four games remaining in the first half of the season, and the first half winner earning an automatic spot in the playoffs, this series against St. Joe is critical for the Pelicans.

Pensacola has won six of their last ten games but have lost two in a row. They will face a St. Joe team that has won eight of their last ten and are 19-6 in all of June. Pelican Field Manager Kash Beauchamp and Blacksnakes Field Manager Chris Carminucci are very familiar with each other as both coached with the Bangor Lumberjacks of the Northeast League in 2004 and are good friends. Fans can look forward to this series being very well managed as the two try to outsmart each other.

The Pelicans have some of the best hitters in the league with Trino Aguilar, Ed Montague and Carlos Mendoza all ranked in the top 10 in American Association hitting. The Pelicans are an aggressive team who lead the league with a team batting average of .291 and 67 stolen bases.

The Blacksnakes boast some of the best pitchers in the league with Mark Nussbeck, who leads the league with his 1.50 ERA and Donovan Graves who is seventh with a 2.66 ERA.
