INDIANAPOLIS -- Shortstop Josh Rodriguez and former Tribe catcher Luke Carlin combined to go 5-for-7 with three runs and two RBI, while in his Triple-A debut starter Corey Kluber allowed just one run on four hits over six innings to lead the Columbus Clippers over the Indianapolis Indians 4-1 on Wednesday night at Victory Field.

With the loss, Indianapolis' record falls to 68-71 on the season, while the win improves Columbus to 78-61 on the year. The victory also gives Columbus a 13-8 final advantage in the season series and helps the Clippers maintain their first place standing in the International League West Division.

Though Indianapolis jumped out to a 1-0 advantage when C Jason Jaramillo singled home RF Brandon Moss in the second, Columbus quickly took over the lead for good with a three-run third before adding an insurance tally in the seventh on their way to the 4-1 victory.

After LF Matt McBride blasted the Clippers onto board with a solo longball to lead off the third, Carlin followed with a walk and quickly came around for what turned out to be the game-winning run when Rodriguez ripped a triple to left. Rodriguez would cross the plate himself later in the frame when CF Ezequiel Carrera roped a single to center to give Columbus a commanding 3-1 advantage.

Carlin and Rodriguez would team up again in the seventh, lining back-to-back doubles to push across an insurance run and increase the Columbus lead to 4-1. Rodriguez also added two singles in the contest to finish the evening 4-for-4 and improve his batting average to .500 (22-for-44) with 14 runs, five RBI and four steals in his 13 games against the Indians this season.

Along with Rodriguez (4-for-4, 1 R, 2 RBI), RF Jose Constanza (2-for-5) and 2B Cord Phelps (2-for-4) also posted multi-hit efforts for the Clippers, while no Tribe batter managed multiple base knocks on the evening.

The Tribe's offensive shut down was due in large part to Kluber (6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO), who was brilliant in his Triple-A debut, as he allowed just one run on four singles, while striking out four over six innings of work. Relievers Carlton Smith (1.0 IP, 1 H), Zach Putnam (1.0 IP) and Saul Rivera (1.0 IP, 2 BB, 1 SO) followed Kluber's outstanding outing with three innings of scoreless relief with Smith and Putnam each earning a hold and Rivera notching his fifth save.

Indians' starter Brad Lincoln (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) was pinned with the loss to fall to 7-4 on the season after allowing two runs on two hits in his pitch count limited action. RHP Joe Martinez (5.0 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO) followed Lincoln and surrendered just two runs despite allowing eight hits, while fellow reliever Brian Bass (2.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 SO) finished the contest with two scoreless frames of work.

A bright spot on the evening was the Tribe's defense which quelled several Columbus rallies by turning double plays in third, fourth, sixth and eighth innings.

Indianapolis now begins their final home series of the season against the Louisville Bats on Thursday, September 2 beginning at a new start time of 6:00 p.m. LHP Dana Eveland is expected to get the start for the Indians, while RHP Chad Reineke is the probable starter for the Bats

The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and broadcast live on Comcast and Bright House Networks digital channel 81 with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show on WXLW-950 AM begins at 5:40 p.m.
