Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk plated five first inning runs and cruised to a 6-2 win over the Gwinnett Braves Wednesday night at Harbor Park.

Norfolk jumped all over Braves starter Erik Cordier (0-1), who was making his Triple-A debut after being promoted from Double-A Mississippi. The Tides chased Cordier after just eight batters, as the 24-year-old yielded two hits and four walks while throwing 41 pitches - 19 of which were strikes.

Rhyne Hughes had an RBI single off Cordier to get the Tides on the board, and Michel Hernandez added a two-run double. After back-to-back walks forced Cordier from the game, Miguel Abreu greeted reliever Cory Gearrin with a two-run single - Abreu's first career Triple-A hit - to cap the first inning scoring.

The first inning outburst was more than enough run support for Tides starter Tim Bascom (4-7), who turned in his second straight strong outing in helping Norfolk win its second consecutive contest over the Braves. Bascom allowed one run on two walks and six hits in six innings, striking out three.

Clint Sammons had three hits and an RBI to lead Gwinnett's offense, while Barbaro Canizares added two hits and two runs to up his league-leading average to .340.

Blake Davis had two hits, a walk, a stolen base and a run scored for the Tides, who have now won six of their last eight games.

Norfolk will welcome in the Charlotte Knights to Harbor Park on Thursday night for the start of a two-game set - Norfolk's final home games of the season. Chris George (5-7, 4.45) will take the mound against Charlotte right-hander Jeff Marquez (8-8, 4.58), with first pitch slated for 7:15. Thursday is also Fan Appreciation Night at Harbor Park, as hundreds of prizes will be awarded throughout the evening prior to a postgame fireworks show.
