Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - A furious four-run rally propelled the Bulls to a 4-3 victory over Charlotte on Wednesday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Angel Chavez laced an RBI double to cap off a four-run eighth inning rally which all started with two outs, as the Bulls earned a victory in the five-game set to close out their regular season series. The Bulls finish the season with a 14-7 against Charlotte and improve their record-setting win total to 86 on the season.
Jeffrey Marquez turned in a solid performance for Charlotte, scattering three hits and three walks while striking out five over 7.0 shutout innings of work. It was the fifth time Marquez took the mound against the Bulls on the season after coming into the night with a 1-3 record and 5.09 ERA over 23.0 innings of work against Durham on the season.
Bobby Livingston was able to match Marquez through the first six innings of work, before Charlotte's offense broke through in the top of the seventh. Dayan Viciedo took an 0-1 pitch from Livingston deep onto the grass just to the right of center field, his 19th home run of the season.
They would add to their lead in the eighth, as nine hitter Donny Lucy led off the inning with a double. After a sacrifice bunt by Buck Coats advanced the runner to third, Bulls skipper Charlie Montoyo made the call to the bullpen for Dale Thayer. An RBI single by Brent Morel scored Lucy from third to make it a two-run lead, and Morel came around to score on a single by Viciedo later in the inning to make it 3-0.
The Bulls offense finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth, as seven straight Bulls reached base all with two outs to take a 4-3 lead. Elliot Johnson doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Justin Ruggiano walked to put men at the corners. Knights closer Ryan Braun came out of the bullpen to get out of the jam, but was unsuccessful as Chris Richard and Joe Dillon came through with RBI singles to make it a one-run game. Pinch runner JJ Furmaniak stole second to put a pair runners in scoring position, and an infield single by Leslie Anderson brought home Richard with the tying run. Angel Chavez followed with a line drive through the hole at shortstop and past a diving left fielder to bring home Furmaniak with the go-ahead run.
Joe Bateman worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his fourth save of the season, as the Bulls win their seventh come-from-behind victory of the season.
The Bulls begin a two-game set with Gwinnett tomorrow night at the DBAP. RHP Aneury Rodriguez (6-5, 3.58) is scheduled to take the hill for Durham, while RHP Todd Redmond (9-10, 4.04) makes the start for the G-Braves. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
