CLINTON - Iowa. - The LumberKings topped the Kernels 6-3 on Sunday afternoon to take the first two games of the 4-game series. The Kernels pushed across the game's first run in the 2nd inning, taking the early 1-0 lead. Gary Mitchell doubled down the left field line and then came home on Matt Scioscia's RBI single to right field.
In the 3rd inning the Kernels doubled their lead to 2-0 when Zach Borenstein's RBI double to the wall in center plated Kevin Moesquit from 1st base. Moesquit quickly slid past the tag of LumberKings catcher Mike Dowd, who received a relay throw from shortstop Anthony Phillips.
Clinton took a 3-2 lead in the 4th inning with three RBI doubles. Dan Paolini reached on a fielding error by Kernels shortstop Eric Stamets to start the inning. Ramon Morla followed with a RBI double to deep center, scoring Paolini. Jabari Blash then drove a RBI double off the wall in right center to plate Morla, tying the game. Mike Dowd gave the LumberKings the lead with a bloop RBI double down the right field line that scored Blash.
The LumberKings pushed their lead to 4-2 in the 6th inning as Jabari Blash scored when Kernels starter Eswarlin Jimenez committed a balk. Eswarlin Jimenez (7-5) went 6 innings and allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits. He struck out 3 and walked 0. Joe Melioris pitched a scoreless inning in relief, allowing 1 hit.
Kevin Rivers gave the LumberKings a 6-2 lead in the 8th inning with a 2-run home run to right field off of Kernels reliever Nick Mutz. Mutz went 1 inning, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 1. The Kernels put the tying run on base in the 9th inning and plated 1 run, cutting the Clinton lead to 6-3. Zach Wright's RBI groundout plated Zach Borenstein.
Rusty Shellhorn (1-0) started for the LumberKings in his Midwest League debut and went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits while striking out 3 and walking 1. John Taylor added a scoreless 8th inning, allowing 1 walk and getting a double play to end the inning. David Colvin allowed a run in 0.2 inning while Stephen Shackleford recorded his 9th save as he induced a game-ending groundout.
