Peoria Chiefs News Release
Grand Chute, WI - The Peoria Chiefs scored two runs early and two runs late and pitched out of a ninth-inning jam to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-3 Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs have won the first two games of the four-game series and are now 21-34 on the half and 56-68 in 2012.
For the second straight game the Chiefs jumped out to a first inning lead, this time against Chad Thompson. Zeke DeVoss tripled to the right-center field wall and Pin-Chieh Chen was hit by a pitch. Dustin Geiger put the Chiefs on top 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to left on a leaping catch by Ben McMahan.
Geiger added to the Chiefs lead in the top of the third when he launched his 16th home run of the season well over the 16-foot-high wall in left field. The solo blast off Thompson but the Chiefs on top 2-0 with two outs in the inning.
Wisconsin got even with some help in the third against Yao-Lin Wang. Yadiel Rivera led off with a single and moved to second on a groundout. With two down, Ben McMahan swung and missed at strike three but reached base when the pitch got away from catcher Chadd Krist. The wild pitch also moved Rivera to third and with the inning extended, both runners scored on a double by Nick Ramirez to tie the game 2-2.
The game stayed 2-2 until the seventh when Rattlers reliever Eric Semmelheck pitched himself into trouble. With one out he issued consecutive walks to Wes Darvill, Bijan Rademacher and Zeke DeVoss to load the bases. Chen put the Chiefs on top 3-2 with a RBI groundout to shortstop as Darvill scored easily.
Wisconsin loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on three walks as well. Wang walked one with one out before giving way to reliever Justin Berg. Berg walked the first two batters he faced before getting a strikeout and a groundout to escape the inning.
The Chiefs added an insurance run in the eighth against the Rattlers pen. Krist singled with one out and went to second on a groundout. Michael Strong relieved Semmelheck and walked Jacob Rogers to put two on base with two outs. Darvill came through with a RBI single to right for a 4-2 lead as Krist scored.
Berg got in trouble in the ninth with a one-out walk and single. Larry Suarez came out of the bullpen and a fielder's choice put runners on the corners with two down. Brandon Macias singled to right to get the Rattlers within one but McMahan popped out to first to end the game with the tying run at third base.
Wang (4-3) threw a career-high 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out seven. Berg walked four and allowed one run on one hit with one strikeout over two innings of work. Suarez allowed one hit in 2/3 of an inning to get his third save of the season.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Dustin Geiger (DH) - Geiger drove in the first two runs of the game with a sacrifice fly and a solo home run. He leads the Chiefs with 16 homers on the season and has 46 RBI in just 62 games.
