
Aguila, Hawks Power Past Hot Rods

Roidany Aguila hit a go-ahead, solo home run in the eighth inning Sunday and the South Bend Silver Hawks (63-61, 28-26) beat the Bowling Green Hot Rods 6-5 at Bowling Green Ballpark. The Silver Hawks remain two games out in the eastern division wild card chase heading into play Monday.
Left-hander Jake Partidge (5-1) surrendered the Aguila home run and took the loss, allowing an earned run on two hits over two innings. For Aguila it was his seventh home run of the season.
The Hot Rods put the potential winning runs aboard in the ninth inning but Matt Sample got Kes Carter to ground out to end the game. Matt Sample tossed two scoreless innings to preserve the win and earn his fifth save.
The Silver Hawks scored four runs in the first inning and jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Ryan Court started the scoring with a solo home run. Aguila followed with a two-run single before Eric Groff capped the rally with a sacrifice fly. Aguila finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the game.
With the Silver Hawks leading 4-2, Matt Helm hit a solo home run in the third inning, his ninth of the season.
Bowling Green's Drew Vettleson swatted a two-run home run in the fourth inning to tie the game at five.
Right-hander Jesse Darrah (8-5) earned the win, working three scoreless innings out of the Silver Hawks bullpen.
Conrad Flynn made his first Silver Hawks start and allowed five earned runs on 10 hits over four innings. Left-hander Ryan Carpenter got the ball for Bowling Green and surrendered five runs, three earned, on seven hits over six innings.
The Silver Hawks and Hot Rods play game three of the four game series Monday at Bowling Green Ballpark. Right-hander Archie Bradley (10-5, 3.80) starts for South Bend and he will be opposed by righty Trevor Shull (5-6, 4.97). First pitch is slated for 7:35 p.m. EST.
