Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
JOLIET, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums got a five-hit complete game out of Jacob Clem as the Beach Bums started their six-game road trip off on a high note with a 5-1 victory over the Joliet Slammers.
The Beach Bums opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as Chase Burch lead off with a double. It was his 38th two-bagger in a Traverse City uniform, giving him the all-time club record. Burch would come into score three batters later on a Sean Gusrang single.
After Joliet tied the game in the bottom of the second, TC came right back to take the lead in the top of the third on a sac fly by Jose Vargas to score Brain Heere who walked to lead off the inning, making it 2-1 Beach Bums.
Traverse City would get a little bit of breathing room in the fifth as Ryan Still got things started with a walk. Two batters later, Kyle Colligan also walked to put runners on first and second. Vargas came up and drove a double down the leftfield line to score Still and make it 3-1. After a fielder's choice by Burch put runners on second and third, Jeff Flagg lined a single into leftfield to score both Burch and Vargas and put the Beach Bums up 5-1.
Meanwhile, on the mound, Jacob Clem was spectacular for Traverse City. The right-hander tossed a complete game five-hitter, allowing just one run. He walked two and struck out four while throwing first pitch strikes to 26 out of 33 hitters he faced and induced 16 ground ball outs in the contest.
The middle game of the series comes up on Monday with Reid Kelly (3-1, 3.82) getting the start for Traverse City against Tyler Ware, who will be making his professional debut for Joliet. Coverage on Sunny Country 101.9 will begin at 7:45 p.m. outside of a scheduled 8:05 first pitch.
