Normal CornBelters News Release
MARION, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, exploded for two big innings and began a three-game road series 9-4 win over the Southern Illinois Miners at Rent One Park.
The CornBelters broke through first in the top of the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Daniel Cayton led off with a walk and moved to second when a sacrifice attempt by Alvaro Ramirez was muffed by Miners pitcher Jimmy Albury. Both runners moved to second and third on a sacrifice, followed by a walk to Pat McKenna to load the bases. Cayton scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Robert Brooks, then Steven Felix sent the other two runners home with a triple to right center. Pat Trettel closed the scoring with a base hit to plate Felix.
The Belters added four more runs in the fifth to increase their lead to 9-0. Alvaro Ramirez led off with a walk and went to third on a single by Ty Wiesemeyer, and a Pat McKenna double scored Ramirez. Wiesemeyer scored on another Brooks sacrifice fly, and McKenna came home on a Steven Felix double. Pat Trettel traded places with Felix with an RBI double as the scoring ended with Normal batting around for the second straight inning.
The Miners recorded a pair of runs in the eighth to end the night for Normal starter Daniel Britt, who turned in his longest performance of the season with a 7.2-inning outing, giving up eight hits while walking one and striking out three. The Miners continued their two-out rally, scoring four times in the eighth to cut the Belters lead to 9-4. The Miners made it 9-6 on a two-run homer off the right-field bullpen roof by Jake Kaase with one out in the ninth, but the Miners would pull no closer.
Britt (3-2) earned the win while Miners starter Albury (0-1) recorded the loss.
The CornBelters continue the brief three-game road trip on Monday night at 7:05 against the Miners. Right-hander Tyler Lavigne (1-1, 2.76 ERA) starts for the Belters while the Miners will throw left-hander Shawn Gilblair (1-0, 4.50 ERA). Pre-game on WJBC.com begins at 6:50.
