Joliet Slammers News Release

JOLIET SLAMMERS (14-13) vs. TRAVERSE CITY BEACH BUMS (17-10)

Sunday, June 17 - 5:05 p.m. CT

Silver Cross Field - Joliet, IL

Game #28 - Home Game #13 (14-13), (6-6)

RHP #13 Wander Alvino (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. RHP #25 Jacob Clem (1-2, 2.92 ERA)

Last time out.

Steven Maxwell threw a complete game, the first of the year for the Slammers, as they won 3-1 over the River City Rascals in O'Fallon, Missouri, in a rain-shortened affair. The game ended after the top half of the eighth due to torrential rain. Offensively the Slammers plated a run in the first on a RBI single from Erik Lis. The single scored Hector Pellot who had doubled with two outs in the frame. Joliet tacked on a run in the third thanks to an Abel Nieves RBI single to score Jimmy Waters. The Rascals got their lone run off Maxwell in the sixth on a Gerardo Avila RBI single to score Charlie Lisk. In what turned out to be their final time up in the game, the Rascals got a lead-off double in the second but the Slammers turned a double play on a line drive right to Pellot. Joliet scored their final run of the game in the top of the eighth as Ben Hewett scored on a wild pitch.

For Starters.

Wander Alvino makes his second start of the season for Joliet tonight. He got the win in his first start against the Schaumburg Boomers on June 12 at Silver Cross Field. Alvino went five innings, only allowing one hit and no runs. He walked four and struck out four. Alvino has six years of affiliated baseball experience in the Astros organization. He advanced as far as High Single-A and recorded a 4.19 ERA in the hitter-friendly California League in 2011. Alvino is 25 years of age and hails from the Dominican Republic.

Against Clem.

Jacob Clem faced the Slammers out of the bullpen on May 23 and threw an inning of perfect ball. Since then he's started four games for Traverse City.

To open.

The Slammers have a record of 5-5 in series openers.

Prevent the long ball.

The Slammers gave up five home runs to Traverse City in the teams' previous series this year. The one game they did not give up a homer, the Slammers won. Traverse City took the other two games.

Winning and losing.

The Slammers have alternated between a loss and a win over the past seven games. Their last winning streak was from May 29 through June 2 when they won five straight games.

After six.

Joliet is 8-1 when leading after six but they are 1-10 when trailing after six.

I plead the fifth.

The Slammers have given up 27 runs in the fifth inning, the most they've surrendered in any inning. Overall, the Slammers have a negative run differential as they've been out-scored 127-117.

More patience.

So far in 2012 the Slammers have walked 108 times, the fourth most in the league. In 2011 they finished with the second fewest walks in the league.

Give me some relief!

In 43.2 IP in May, Joliet's bullpen had an era of 1.88. In 53 IP in June, they have a 6.11 ERA.

Almost the same as last year.

The Slammers currently sit at 14-13, the exact same record they had after 27 games in 2011. After 27 games last year, Joliet was one game out of first. This year they sit four games out of first.

Error indicator.

The Slammers are 2-10 in games when they make an error. They are 12-3 in games when they do not.

Out-hit.

When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 12-4, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 1-9.
