
Miners Lose Despite Late Comeback

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners were halted of a late comeback as they fell to the Normal CornBelters 9-6. Miners starter Jimmy Albury made his 2012 debut as he only went 3.1 innings, giving up seven runs, three earned, allowed six hits, walked four and struck out three batters.
The CornBelters jumped out to an early lead in the top of the third off Miners starter Jimmy Albury as they scored four runs total in the inning to take the lead 4-0. All of those runs were unearned because of an error by Albury. The CornBelters scored five more runs in the top of fourth off Miners starter Jimmy Albury and Miners reliever Anthony Collazo to take a 9-0 lead. Collazo threw 3.2 innings, gave up five hits, allowed two runs (both earned), walked two and struck out three.
After taking a 9-0 lead, CornBelters starter Daniel Britt only allowed three hits through six innings. He gave up two hits in the seventh but didn't allow a run. He got into trouble in the bottom of the eighth as the Miners scored four runs to make it 9-4. Matt Fields and Carlos Mendez both had RBI singles. An error by CornBelters short stop Pat McKenna allowed two runs to score, one of those off Cannon Lester's single. Daniel Britt exited the game after going 7.2 innings, who gave way to Robert Hiller.
With the Miners down by five, Gabriel Shaw pitched two scoreless innings only giving up one hit and striking out two batters. The Miners scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Robert Hiller when Jake Kaase hit a two run home run to make it 9-6. The CornBelters brought in Rich Mascheri to close it out and he retired both Chad Maddox and Matt Fields to earn his second save of the season.
With the loss, the Miners fall to 17-11 on the season. Traverse City defeated Joliet 5-1 so the Miners are now in second place. With the win, Normal improves to 9-17 on the season. Tomorrow will feature a very good pitching matchup as the Miners send LHP Shawn Gilblair to the ound (3-1, 3.10 ERA) as he'll be opposed by CornBelters starter RHP Tyler Lavigne (1-1, 2.76 ERA). First pitch at Rent One Park is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
