Lakeshore Chinooks News Release
Mequon, WI - The Chinooks came into this game with a 4-4 record, while the Mallards entered with a 6-2 mark, leading the South Division of the Northwoods League. The Chinooks were looking to extend the Mallards two-game losing streak.
Chinooks sent Alex Rogers (North Dakota State) to the mound for his second start after posting a 3.38 ERA in his first outing against Waterloo giving up five hits, no walks, and two strikeouts. Both teams had a slow start offensively and the game started out as a battle of the pitchers. Rogers held the Mallards scoreless through six innings until Matt Vierling (Notre Dame) scored off an RBI single in the top of the sixth by Sam Armstrong (Jacksonville University). Rogers lasted six innings after totaling 76 total pitches with two strikeouts and no walks.
Top of the seventh, Chinooks bring in relief pitcher Austin Jones (UW-Whitewater). Jones comes into the game with a 3.00 ERA and a 1-1 record. Nico Hoerner (Stanford) got things started for the Mallards, getting a base hit to right. After Hoerner's base hit, a wild pitch by Jones advanced Hoerner to second and an RBI double by Cameron Frost (Washington State) scored Hoerner making it 2-0 Mallards. Top of the eighth, Jones returns to pitch for the Chinooks and gives up a leadoff double to center for Sam Armstrong (Jacksonville University). Jones battles back to get out of the inning keeping it 2-0 Mallards.
Bottom of the eighth, Mallards bring in relief pitcher Alex Hintze (UCONN). With one out, Chinooks second baseman, Royce Ando (Michigan State) comes to the plate and hits a triple down the right field line. Joe Duncan grounds out to the shortstop to get his third RBI of the season and score Ando from third, making it 2-1 Mallards.
Jones exits after pitching two innings giving up four hits and striking out two with no walks. Top of the ninth Austin Havekost (Kent State) comes out of the bullpen and into pitch for the Chinooks. Havekost did his job, holding the Mallards scoreless.
Bottom of the ninth Alex Smith (North Florida) comes in to face the heart of the Chinooks line up. Chinooks got the tying run aboard after a base hit from Zac Taylor (Houston). Owen Miller (Illinois State) popped up to the Mallard's first baseman for out number three to close the game and secure the win for the Mallards. Smith earns his second save of the season for the Mallards and Rogers gets his second loss on the season for the Chinooks. This is the Chinooks first loss at home, making their record 4-5 and the Mallards 7-2.
Coming into the game Alex Rogers made a few pitching adjustments since his last outing against Waterloo. While talking with Rogers he said "Last time I pitched the ball was elevated. My goal tonight against the Mallards was to keep the ball down and get the Mallards to swing on top and trust my defense to make plays." Rogers said he felt good about his pitching but it is unfortunate that him and the team could not come out with a win.
The Chinooks and the Mallards will square off again on Thursday in Madison. Then, will return home to take on Waterloo in a two game series.
