Peoria Chiefs News Release

Cedar Rapids, IA - Cliff Andersen's three-run blast broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh and four pitchers carried the Peoria Chiefs to a 5-2 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels Monday night. The series opening win moves Peoria to 2-2 on the 10-game road trip and 11-19 on the season.

With the score tied 2-2, the Chiefs struck against Kernels starter Mason Tobin in the seventh. Dylan Johnston led off with a single up the middle and Jose Made walked. Marwin Gonzalez tried to bunt the duo into scoring position by eventually struck out swinging. Cliff Andersen followed with his biggest hit of the season, a long home run over the right field wall for a 5-2 Chiefs lead. Andersen's second homer of the season came on his third hit of the night and gave the Chiefs a three run advantage.

For just the 11th time this season, the Chiefs scored first as they took advantage of a first inning Kernels error. Andersen led off the game with an infield single and moved to second on a wild throw by third baseman Jay Brossman. After a sac bunt, Nate Samson gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead with a RBI groundout to first base. Josh Donaldson followed with a towering home run over the Pavilion and hot tub in left field for a 2-0 Chiefs lead. The homer is Donaldson's second of the road trip and third of the season.

Peoria had a golden chance to blow the game open in the third but again failed in the clutch. Andersen reached on an error, Johnson was hit by a pitch and Samson walked to load the bases with no outs. Donaldson popped up to shallow right and Julio Perez easily nailed Andersen trying to scored from third for a double play. With runners at second and third, Mason Tobin got Kyler Burke to fly out harmlessly to left and end the inning.

Cedar Rapids tied the game in the fifth against Billy Muldowney. Brossman led off the inning with a homer to center, his second of the season. After two quick outs, Perez tripled to right-center. Anel De Los Santos hit a hard grounder off of Muldowney's leg and by time the Chiefs hurler recovered and threw home, Perez was safe to tie the game 2-2. Jordan Latham relieved Muldowney and struck out Tyler Johnson to end the threat.

Muldowney allowed two runs on three hits over 3 2/3 innings while striking out seven in his second outing of the season. Latham (1-1) struck out three and allowed one hit over 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Craig Muschko retired all six batters he faced with three strikeouts in two perfect innings. Steve Vento walked one and struck out two in the ninth to nail down his second save of the season.

Player of the Game - Cliff Andersen (RF) - Moved into the leadoff spot for the first time since April 16, Andersen responded with three hits and three RBI. He singled and scored in the first, reached on an error in the third, singled in the fifth and homered in the seventh to finish 3-for-5.
