Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Quad Cities River Bandits never recovered from a four-run bottom of the first inning on Monday night at Fifth Third Field, losing to the Dayton Dragons by a 9-2 score in the first game of a three-game series.
The loss dropped Quad Cities (16-13) to 1-3 on their current six-game road trip, as the River Bandits have gone just 5-8 on the road this season compared to an 11-5 home record. Dayton (17-12) got a big game from Justin Reed, who went 4-for-4 with a homer out of the ninth spot in the batting order.
Initially, it was the River Bandits who got on the board in the top of the opening frame. Leading off for the second straight day, Mike Folli reached on an error and advanced to third thanks to a wild pitch and a groundball. With one away, Pete Kozma's groundout to the right side brought the runner home for a 1-0 lead.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Dragons were able to take advantage of a bout of wildness from River Bandits' starter Nick Additon. The lefty walked the first two batters on eight straight pitches, and a single by Todd Frazier loaded the bases with nobody out. After Brandon Waring was hit by a pitch to force in a run, Denis Phipps belted a double to center field that bounced off the wall and plated two more. Later in the frame Jason Bour capped the rally with a sacrifice fly to right, giving Dayton a 4-1 lead after one inning of play.
Over the next few frames, the Dragons extended their lead thanks to a pair of longballs. Reed led off the second inning by driving an 0-2 pitch out of the yard to right field for a solo homer. In the fourth, Reed started the inning by reaching on a bunt single. Two outs later Frazier drew a walk, and Waring promptly deposited the very next pitch over the wall in left-center for a three-run homer, making it an 8-1 ballgame.
Curtis Partch (1-4) cruised from there, earning his first win of the year with six solid innings. He allowed just one unearned run on five hits, striking out four without issuing a walk. Jeremy Horst (2) went the rest of the way, allowing one run on two hits over three innings to earn the save.
Reed doubled and scored for a 9-1 lead in the sixth before Quad Cities added a run in the eighth. Jose Garcia drew a leadoff walk and came home no a two-out single by Paul Vazquez to reach the 9-2 final.
Additon (3-2) took the loss in an uncharacteristically rough outing. After issuing two walks and hitting a man through the first four batters he faced, a four-run first inning was followed up by a leadoff homer in the second. Although he did recover to strike out three of the last four batters he faced, his final line included five runs on four hits in just two innings of work.
UP NEXT: The River Bandits continue their six-game road trip with game two of a three-game set at 6:00 p.m. CT in Dayton on Tuesday night. The series starting May 8 will kick off with a Thirst-day Thursday and an Ocho de Mayo fiesta with half-price beer, wine, margaritas and Mexican food, then continues with a FIREWORKS Friday, featuring a throwback River Bandits jersey auction to benefit the ALS Association. Saturday's game will feature a home cap giveaway courtesy of Orthopaedic Specialists before a Rockin' Saturday, and the festivities will also include a variety of promotions for Genesis Military Appreciation Night, including military displays and an exhibition game featuring the Military All-Stars at 4:00 p.m. The series will conclude on a U.S. Bank Family Sunday, featuring clowns, face-painters, and the chance for kids to run the bases after the game!
